N.J. Senate fails to override Christie veto on gun bill

TRENTON — The state Senate failed Thursday to override Gov. Chris Christie's veto of a bill that would have included local law enforcement officers in the process of deciding whether a person with a documented mental illness could apply for a gun permit.

But Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) did not let the bill go down to defeat. He refused to close out the voting and pulled the item from consideration.

"I am committing to you right now: be prepared to vote on this for many sessions" to come, Sweeney said.

Twenty-seven votes are needed to override a veto in the 40-member Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, who hold 24 seats. The effort fell two votes shy, with a 25-11 vote.
