DETROIT (AP) A Detroit dog owner faces sentencing after pleading guilty in the brutal mauling of a man who was attacked while feeding a pack of pit bulls.
Steve Constantine lost most of his left arm, his left leg below the knee and his left ear last fall.
Sixty-two-year-old Derick Felton pleaded guilty earlier this month to harboring dangerous animals that caused injuries. A judge has said he's likely to get probation. Felton's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Friday.
The 51-year-old Constantine was trying to feed Felton's dogs when he was attacked. Police killed one dog at the scene. Eleven other pit bulls or pit bull mixes were captured and euthanized.

(53,235 posts)I had neighbors who were breeding pit bulls for fighting. The cops wouldn't do anything. I had to build a fence so I could get to my car, because sometimes the dogs would wander over. Cops? Nothing.
Finally, the economy got them out. They foreclosed on the house and a nice family with a ferret moved in. I've never seen the ferret and probably never will, but if I do, I'm not afraid of it mauling me.

(14,881 posts)He broke the law having that number of dogs. There had been complaints from neighbors about them running loose. The attacked man was his friend and told police he hit the dogs and didn't feed them "for long periods of time." Oh, and once medics arrived, he went back inside his house and didn't help his "friend" who was screaming for help. The medics were afraid to get out of the ambulance, so waited for police to arrive.
Unfuckingbelievable. Probation? Seriously? I can't help but wonder if he was involved in a dog fighting ring. None of this makes sense. None of it.

Felton admitted to owning "about 15" dogs, with the puppies included.
"Because I want to," Felton told the investigator when asked why he owned so many.
Detroit law limits the number of adult dogs at a single residence to four. A code violation is punishable by up to 20 days in jail and/or a $250 fine, according to the Code of Ordinances.
"Constantine told police he's seen the dogs outside their yard before and they "go after people."
"They bark and growl a lot," Constantine told police. "Sometimes Butch will hit them or not feed them for a long time."
