Nearly A Third Of Migrants In Germany Falsely Claim To Be Syrian, Officials Say

BERLIN German officials said Friday that nearly a third of all asylum seekers arriving in the country appear to be falsely claiming to be Syrian, even as Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière called on European nations to take radical new steps to curb the regions refugee crisis.
So far this year, Germany has received 527,000 asylum seekers more than any other nation in Europe. Tobias Plate, an interior ministry spokesman, acknowledged estimates Friday that roughly 30 percent of the asylum seekers are those hailing from other countries but claiming to be Syrian. Given the civil war raging in Syria, roughly 87 percent of Syrians are successfully winning asylum in Germany.
Plate said that rather than a concrete statistic, the number was an estimate based on the perceptions of authorities on the ground, including the German Federal Police, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, and Frontex, Europes border agency.
It is an indication, he said during a news conference in Berlin, of how hard it is to know the true nationalities of asylum seekers, many of whom are arriving without passports.

I am also seeing lots of families, even infants. Maybe they can grow up to be terrorists in somebody's fevered imagination.

(2,868 posts)So....we know Saudi funds ISIS....we also know Saudi is NOT accepting refugees.....Saudi has offered to build 100 mosques in Germany.
Do you really think this would be BELOW ISIS? To use a nightmare like this to send in 1000s of their people out?
From 9-11, we KNOW SA is NOT a friend - it is really not a big leap to think that ISIS\Saudi are using this (whether they planned or just taking advantage is irrelevant at this point) to spread their murderous crap.
It is not a straight line, but to deny the potential for this to be MUCH more than a humanitarian issue is naive.

(54,050 posts)I got back over here early last week and was told this the moment I stepped off the plane. Fake Syrian passports have been sold for 1000 to poor wretches for whom it was all they had, promising it was their golden ticket to get into Germany free. Germany has plenty of ethnic Arab citizens working for immigration authorities. They can easily spot someone arriving with Syrian passport who speaks no Arabic, no Aramaic, no Assyrian, no Kurdish, nor any of the other languages spoken in Syria, but rather Urdu, Farsi, Pashto, Bengali, or one of any number of languages spoken nowhere near Syria.

(24,692 posts)refugees seems consistent. (Even the "nearly 1/3" estimate was as 'estimate based on perceptions'.) Many of the ~30% non-Syrians may be from other war-torn countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, etc.
It will be important to weed out the 10-15% who are not genuine refugees without penalizing the 85-90% of people who are. Only the far-right blames and punishes the vast majority of these people for the fact that a small minority accompany them under false pretenses.

(35,191 posts)"Refugees" that have lived outside of the area they're "fleeing" for a year or two aren't really refugees. They had refuge. They decided to opt for better refuge.
Moreover, many that left Syria aren't fleeing the war but have just decided they can get a better deal elsewhere.
So knock out the non-Syrians. Then remove from the asylum pool those who fled war a year or 3 ago and are now fleeing the horrors of "wartime" Lebanon or Turkey. Many of those are the younger men who have left their families behind for now--fairly safe, with some resources--until they can get situated and send for them.
A lot of people are being played. They hear the word "refugee" and rather than be offensive by questioning the status instead facilitate their own duping.
