CNN debate criteria would allow Joe Biden to participate
Source: CNN
Vice President Joe Biden will be invited to participate in the first Democratic presidential primary debate if he declares his intention to seek his party's nomination as late as the day of the debate, eligibility criteria released Monday by CNN shows.
So far, Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Jim Webb have been invited to the first Democratic National Committee-sanctioned debate on Oct. 13 at the Wynn Las Vegas.
All five of the candidates have achieved an average of 1% in three polls, recognized by CNN, released between Aug. 1 and Oct. 10. The debate criteria was published Monday morning.
CNN previously named Anchor Anderson Cooper as the debate moderator. On Monday, CNN announced that Chief Political Correspondent Dana Bash and CNN en Español Anchor Juan Carlos Lopez will ask additional questions, and Anchor Don Lemon will present questions to the candidates submitted through Facebook during the two-hour primetime debate.

(12,882 posts)that I'm on the backside of my years. It's hard to guess whether it'll be climate change or the perfect storm of our politics that delivers a catastrophic blow. I'm not sure I wanna be here to witness that final debacle.
Of course, I still take issue with these staged events being served under the title: "debate". They're scripted Q & A sessions. Real debates would be on C-span with no time constraints or commercials. A bonus would be to have a super-computer tuned to do instant fact checking..... ALTHOUGH..... at a GOP "debate", the computer would likely crash early on!

(39,313 posts)but still don't really get why Joe would run. I can't see him doing it just for the party and I don't think he will do that well in the primaries or take much from Bernie.

(405 posts)He will only run if Hillary drops out. I think Obama and the DNC called upon him to play this role, and he agreed to do it because if not Hillary, then who? The Party leadership doesn't want Bernie, and Biden is the only other Democratic politician that polls well.

(24,695 posts)and look at how members of the Senate voted on legislation like -----------------let's say bankruptcy relief and student debt, climate, jobs, social programs-----------------these five measures are driving my vote.
Plus the simple fact that the citizens of this country deserve to ask the questions in the debate, and not talking points from a moderator trying to score rating points------------for the moola
And I will tell you I have a bias for a candidate, because of those particular votes, up above, from the past to the current situation
When a candidate has only gotten 2 minutes of air time on average compared to the other candidates air time--------------this election is being driven by networks(s) that do not want a Democratic-Socialist, just maybe they should look at Britain and see what happened people are fed up---------------------with austerity
Honk-------------------for a political revolution Bernie 2016

(12,655 posts)we need to remember that.
I don't really care one way or the other if Joe participates or gets into the race, because it will be a very clear delineation with Joe and Hillary on the establishment side, and Bernie and O'Mally on the progressive side. Chafee even though he's fairly establishment, will continue to hammer the Iraq war and the hawkishness of the establishment dems, so his presence helps O'Malley and Sanders against the establishment. The only downside to Joe being in the race and in the debate is that there will be six people instead of five, and it will be very easy for CNN to try to give Joe and Hillary most of the air time and leave Bernie any O'Mally and Chafee completely out of it. poor webb probably lucky if he gets to make an opening statement.

And FWIW, Biden won't be hogging the time because he won't be there.

(12,655 posts)this will he or won't he dance will have to come to an end the day of the debate. And from what I've seen of him, I just don't think he has it in him to do this. and as far as CNN, yes they work for their advertisers in their advertisers work for the large corporations who are looking to make money and lots of it.

(14,173 posts)With some in the MSM and the DNC Hillary camp. They want Biden to run, or at the very least not say he isn't.....yet. And meanwhile have the MSM treat him as a real threat to run and win. Not only can they have yet another reason NOT to talk about Bernie Sanders, but Hillary will have this extra boost in the wings when he proclaims, at the perfect time for maximum effect, that he is not running, or if he does, that he will be pulling out....AND he will encourage all his supporters to switch their votes to Hillary. His endorsement will be her last minute surge...and she may just need it.

(5,400 posts)It's not like they're real debates, so the lack of notice to other candidates isn't so bad. Personally I'd favor 48 hours notice at a minimum, given the current circumstances.
If it was a real debate the lack of notice would be unacceptable.
