Colombias prison authorities strip convicted politicians of luxury items

Colombias prison authority said Monday it had removed cell phones, iPads and other luxurious communication material from an infamous wing in Bogotas La Picota prison that is home to dozens of convicted politicians.
The move comes after public indignation prison authorities inability to control high profile prisoners and their not-very-prison-like lifestyle.

A Friday meeting between officials from the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC), Minister of Justice Yesid Reyes and anti-corruption Senator Claudia Lopez discussed recent findings from an investigation looking at the influence of convicted politicians on La Picota prison authorities. Senator López investigation focused on luxury treatments of former government officials and businessmen.
While prison officials asked for more evidence, INPEC Director General Jorge Ramírez took the preventative measure to cut Internet, telephone, and television access to inmates in the ERE Pavilion section of La Picota according to El Tiempo.
