The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has decided to withhold an endorsement in the 2016 presidential race for now, with the powerful union group saying its members look forward to meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and any other candidate regardless of party affiliation committed to improving the lives of working families.
Its long past time for Republicans and Democrats to put aside their differences and work together for the good of our country, Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa said in a statement. The Teamsters will work with and support any candidate who puts the needs of Americas working families above the deep pockets of their corporate donors.
Though the unions statement goes beyond mentioning only Mrs. Clinton, the decision, made Tuesday by the unions general executive board, comes a little more than a week after she came out in opposition to the Keystone XL oil pipeline. The project is supported by major unions but opposed by environmentalist groups, another key Democratic constituency.
In its statement, the union also mentioned potentially meeting with Vice President Joseph R. Biden, should he choose to run for president.
