Firefighters’ Union Backs Away From Endorsement of Hillary Clinton

The International Association of Fire Fighters, one of the countrys more politically powerful unions, has abandoned its initial plans to endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, according to union sources.
Harold A. Schaitberger, the unions general president, informed Mrs. Clintons campaign manager, Robby Mook, in a telephone call on Monday. According to a union official, Mr. Schaitberger told Mr. Mook that the executive board and rank-and-file members the latter were recently polled did not support a Clinton endorsement.
The early support of a cross section of unions most prominently the American Federation of Teachers, which endorsed Mrs. Clinton in July had been a source of strength for the Clinton campaign. But in recent weeks, as Mrs. Clintons numbers in some polls have sagged and she has faced an increasingly formidable challenge from Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, some labor unions appear to have had second thoughts.
The impetus for Mr. Schaitbergers call to Mr. Mook were conversations about the endorsement at the boards meetings in mid-September, when board members expressed interest in the possibility that Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. would join the Democratic field.

I have had friends quit fire departments because of the politics, lucrative payments of many hundreds of millions have moved into fire departments that have some wondering why and what is going on politically?

And it is now a loud message to Hillary Clinton: Not worthy of any endorsement of any kind.

(37,449 posts)that suffered and continue to suffer the most in this country. She was there when the attacks began and hasn't left. if the IAFF doesn't recognize it well then...they can....FDNY will. She was there when Bush's Sec. Christine Todd Whitman was saying the air was fine. She was there when WTC cough (World Trade Center Cough) was diagnosed, the Sen from VT. not so much.

.who should be their choice, then I'd much rather have Biden than Hillary.
Sad that unions don't go with the most progressive, pro-labor candidate.

(38,958 posts)it is far, far too early for Unions to be endorsing any candidate. This is a time to listen and make a completely informed decision on what they have to offer labor. I believe they should really wait and simply endorse the eventual nominee. It would make the job much simpler.

I can only name 3-4 ironworkers in Colorado who ARENT righties.
Almost every cop I know is a righty. Every FF I know is a righty. Everybody loves the job protections, but they vote republican anyway.
