South Carolina hit by torrential rainfall; seven dead

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - Torrential rainfall that South Carolina's governor called a once-in-a-millennium downpour flooded the southeastern U.S. state on Sunday, causing at least seven deaths in the Carolinas.

The storm had dumped more than 18 inches (45 cm) of rain in parts of central South Carolina by early Sunday. The state climatologist forecast another 2 to 6 inches (5 to 15 cm) through Monday as the rainfall began to slacken.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said parts of the state were hit with rainfall that would be expected to occur once in 1,000 years, with the Congaree River running at its highest level since 1936.

"Our goal is all hands on deck. If you are in your house, stay in your house," Haley told a news conference. "This is not something to be out taking pictures of."

once again confirming that the god they worship has lousy aim.

I hope rebuilding and healing will be rapid. I hope people who lost everything but their lives manage to recover. I hope this rain is over soon.

What a heartless sentiment. "Them" in this case are actual *people* who are dying.

but since they decry the so called evil federal government they shouldn't take any federal assistance.

As disabled american on SSI,Medicaid, and food stamps those who vote republican want to take everything from me and threw me on street with nothing with supporting political party whose mission is to destroy the social safety net.so they were heartless long before i made that post.

All the people in states with Republicans in office?

If you have any dedication to the idea of the common good, or human rights, you don't deny it to anyone. This is real life, not a political game.

Or were they just God's collateral damage?

Oh, and nice of you to imply that none of the folks in SC are as Christian as yourself, and thus should be punished somehow. What was that thing about casting the first stone again?

And finally, what does being white have anything to do with anything?

Ugh. Welcome to DU. Enjoy your hopefully short visit.

My very liberal Bernie Sanders loving daughter is at college in SC. Her very liberal father (me), mother, stepmother and stepfather in Alabama were very worried about her.

I try to work within the "don't be an asshole" rule of life.

Why, it's almost as if the drunken uncle monkey-god is punishing South Carolina for its institutionalized racism and other disgusting collective behavior.

Has someone asked Pat Robertson about this?
