Biden backing Asia trade pact despite union opposition

WASHINGTON Labor groups have a warning for Vice President Joe Biden as he lobbies for a major trade pact with Asia: We won't forget this if you run for president.
A longtime darling of unions, Biden has been skeptical of previous sweeping free trade deals, warning of risks to U.S. jobs. Yet he's firmly supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership, putting him at odds with most Democratic presidential candidates and jeopardizing his support from unions if he enters the race.
Biden planned to speak Wednesday to union officials and organizers, many of whom are mounting an aggressive campaign to block the pact, known as TPP. The White House workers summit will offer the first glimpse at how Biden will sell the deal to skeptics as Congress considers its approval.
"It's an unfortunate side-effect of this trade policy because Joe Biden is beloved in the labor community," said Chuck Rocha, a longtime labor organizer and Democratic consultant. "But they're really drawing a line in the sand on the issue more than they ever have in the history of the movement."

(2,941 posts)and millions of people are about to lose their jobs and millions more will have wages lowered.
But drug companies and hospitals and universities?
They'll nail us to the wall with jacked up prices.
Neither party wants to address price gouging, never ending wars, gun violence and outsourcing.
America wrapped around the fallacy of exceptionalism.

(22,651 posts)can understand how unions never like how we traded with for example countries like China. All our major industries, moved industry there and dumped American workers for the cheap Chinese labor.
Plus China didn't care/doesn't care today about pollution from those industries, dangerous work conditions or care a wit about animal abuse from their million animal!! factory farms.
Even our drug industries like the PMU, premarin drug moved to china because Chinese are willing to strap-in/restrain for life, live always kept pregnant horses and collect their urine daily.
If America doesn't want to deal & sign with the countries on "trans pacific partnership, trade treaty", China will be happy to continue to deal with those countries.
Remember China is NOT a signer or party country of the TPP.

(22,651 posts)'3rd' worldish countries, China dominates them totally, land and now sea.
China just built that island out in small countries- main fishing seas, and now they 'threaten' 1st world countries who ask WTF are you doing China? But they shoot at and kill fishermen from tiny country fishing boats.

(24,632 posts)when you drive up to a corner of an intersection and you see a woman and man standing there with a cardboard sign up---------------"SAYING HOMELESS" , OR "LOST JOB" will do anything for food or work "GOD BLESS" through no fault of there own in a lot of aspects, there is going to be more of this stuff, just because of this "DEAL"
This is just out right outrageous , any democrat or DINO or for that matter any right wing screaming republican ,that signs on to this "DEAL" like you did in your last vote------------------look for another job, write a book about how wonderful your life has been, collect your government pension, and health care, go on talk shows and bloviate about how wonderful you are and what you did, and while you are doing that and you drive by that street corner one day and see your fellow American with that card board sign saying "LOST JOB. or HOMELESS" with "GOD BLESS" written on it and they are dirty and hungry, just ask yourself, if you have a "CONSCIENCE", did I do that to this person and those families, when I voted for this "DEAL" of greed---------------really look past your ego for once.
And lets not forget how the vice -president voted on the bankruptcy bill, right along with the other senator from Delaware Carper
Honk -------------------------for a political revolution Bernie 2016

(2,208 posts)I guess Joe's working class background is too far in his past, that is a shame. The big worry I have is that democratic economic policy continues to drift to the right, in favor of "globalization" and "free trade", allowing room for fascistic rightwing populists, like Trump. to lure desperate workers to vote republican.

(46,804 posts)I think there are certain issues that he cannot oppose the president on, while he is still VP. I should think that this will make campaigning difficult in some ways.

It will be interesting to see if Biden joins the race or is saying this because he is not going to run.

(1,917 posts)Repubs are all clamoring to get this passed.
It screws the American worker, they're drooling over it.
As for Dems, only the DINOs will be for this and there are way too many of them.

(12,655 posts)om was my second choice, but he really pissed me off with his inaccurate BS slam of bernie on the gun issue.
biden was semi third, although i would not really be able to vote for him since he supported the iraq war.
i am thinking of bumping chafee to second after bernie, although i disagree with much of his financial outlook. But he did vote against the war and was the only Republican to do so.
we seriously can't do any better than this in the Democratic Party? What a disgrace
I guess this is what oligarchy looks like during election season.
