As soon as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) shocked his fellow Republicans by withdrawing from the race for House speaker, Paul Ryan knew what was coming.
I will not be a candidate, the Wisconsin Republican said in a release issued less than 20 minutes after McCarthys stunning Thursday announcement, in an immediate bid to cut off any pressure for him to do a job he has repeatedly said he does not want.
But this time, it didnt take. By mid-afternoon, outgoing speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) had spoken to Ryan at least twice, trying to convince the reluctant congressman that he was the only man who could save House Republicans from their self-created chaos.
By days end, after hunkering down for two hours in his ceremonial office a few steps from the House floor, after listening to pleas from friends to take the reins of the bitterly divided Republican caucus, he emerged, declining to explicitly state his plans.
Ive got no news for you guys, Ryan told reporters, exiting the Capitol. Ive got nothing to add right now. . . . This is not the time or place, guys........................

(2,208 posts)I hear that Ryan is a budgetary math whiz, as long as he's allowed enough asterisks.

(10,279 posts)that mangles the GOP budget plan. For proof, I refer back to the Biden v. Ryan V.P. candidate debate, in which Biden schooled Ryan in the fine art of federal budgeting. Biden didn't cut away Ryan's manhood, but he certainly crushed his vocal cords.

(10,857 posts)And amusingly, the "can't do math" part makes him the Republicans' most qualified person for the job of Speaker.
Because he wrote a bad budget that didn't work, ONE TIME, years ago.
I'm pretty sure that's the last time the Republicans in the House even attempted to do the "doing their jobs" part of doing their jobs.

(14,308 posts)The new Speaker of The House will be Mitt Romney.
Although Donald Trump would undoubtedly be better. You won't believe how well we'd be doing if Donald Trump was Speaker. The Democrats love him after all and so does the Black Caucus. He gets along great with President Obama. He gets along with everybody. People will be saying he did amazing things if we made Donald Trump the new Speaker. People would say we're winning again.
