ConAgra says it's 'getting closer' to detailing 1,000 job cuts

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Barbara Soderlin

ConAgra Foods is “getting closer” to telling its employees precisely who will lose their jobs and who won’t, the company told The World-Herald on Thursday, two weeks after the packaged-food manufacturer said it would lay off 1,000 Omaha workers and transfer 300 additional jobs to Chicago.

The company also has started talking with some employees who are eligible for retirement benefits. An executive said he expects that some employees will choose to retire.

Experts in handling layoffs said a lack of certainty surrounding a job can cause anxiety among workers and eat into productivity. They recommend that companies give workers all the information at once instead of piecemeal.

“Most employees and most people in general want stability, consistency and predictability,” said Richard Chaifetz, chief executive officer of Chicago-based ComPsych, a provider of employee-assistance programs. “When there are rumors or announcements of pending layoffs, that creates a lot of anxiety in the workforce.”
