Florida church musician killed by police officer on the side of the road, family looking for answers

Source: New York Daily News

He was scheduled to be the lead drummer at his church just a few hours later. Church officials told the Daily News that Corey had never stood them up before and that they knew something was seriously wrong almost right away when he didn’t show up for church on Sunday morning and couldn’t be reached by phone.

We now know Jones was already dead, shot and killed by a Palm Beach Garden Police Officer on I-95 minutes after he spoke to his brother around 3:15 a.m.

“When Corey wasn’t playing the drums for me, he was right down the street at his family’s church every single Sunday,” Benjamin Dixon, a friend of Corey’s told The News. “He was a church musician... a church man. He was the most laid back, easy going guy I’ve ever worked with.”

Fifteen hours after Corey was shot and killed, police came to his brother’s home with the news — but answers were elusive.

As a condition of employment a police officer should be required to immediately file a police report on a shooting that is available to the family. Failure to do so should be grounds for immediate dismissal. A police officer has a right to 5th Amendment protection, but not to the job.

Corey’s car broke down, and he called his brother telling him that he would need a tow. That was the last time his brother heard from him. Nearly 15 hours later, the Palm Beach Sherriff’s Department came to the family home and informed them that Corey had been shot and killed by police.

What is with these long investigations? The sheriff's spokespeople said an investigation could take months? I guarantee if a policeman was dead at the side of the road and they had the shooter an investigation would not take months.

justify later.

if whatever happened was definitive enough for the officer to draw his weapon and fire. then it should be definitive enough to release that reasoning to his family and the public.

If there was profiling going on, and I bet there was, I-95 is a good bet for where it was done.

I'd react as if he were a threat. The victim had every right and justification to pull out any weapon he had.

“As a result of the confrontation,” Raja fatally shot Jones.

Every one who has spoken with reporters has stated emphatically this young man was absolutely non-threatening.

An article from the Palm Beach Post:

Update: Family members to gather, speak at Boynton church today

 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 | Filed in: Central PBC

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Update, 2:30 p.m.: Family members plan to gather this evening at Bible Church of God in Boynton Beach to speak about Corey Jones, the 31-year-old killed by a Palm Beach Gardens police officer early Sunday.

Jones’ grandfather, Bishop Sylvester Banks, and other family members work at the church. Several loved ones of Jones plan to gather and share memories of the local drummer, said Jones’ cousin Remus Johnson.
“We’re really numb right now, just trying to understand what happened,” Johnson said.

Corey Jones’ brother, Clinton Jones Jr., heard from Corey just after car issues left him stranded on the off-ramp of Interstate 95 southbound at PGA Boulevard at about 3 a.m. Sunday, family members say.

The family wasn’t notified of the fatal shooting until about 6 p.m., Johnson said.

...if Mr. Jones was holding a tire iron or some other tool - not as a weapon, but as a tool to work on his disabled car. Police are WAY too quick to fire when confronted with something that vaguely resembles something that could be a weapon, and they are almost always cleared by their internal investigations over it.

And I agree with what was stated earlier - if the officer was in plain clothes and in an unmarked vehicle, there'd better be good, solid evidence (dash cam video, for example) that he declared himself to be law enforcement to Mr. Jones before anything went down between them.

I sometimes think our rights diminish if a police officer is within a certain distance to us. Have a handgun to protect your home? Better hope the unknown person breaking into your home isn't an undercover officer - otherwise, your right to defend yourself ends. Holding a hose nozzle? Have a dog in your back yard? Better hope a cop doesn't climb over your fence to look for a missing child - the dog may be shot. In the wrong place at the wrong time? A reckless officer will be cleared if he or she seriously injures or even kills you out of the mistaken impression that you're a criminal suspect, or if you're unlucky enough to be close to one.
