(8,217 posts)I don't mind the guy, but his message is sadly at least about 8 years too late.
The current conversation is more on Domestic issues, thankfully(sadly it is still completely unfocused, more towards the trappings rather than the substance, and at least for the Republican side completely missing the point), so his focus towards overseas issues and the wars, does not quite find as much traction.
I only wish him well.

I agree that it is important but the conversation has shifted more towards the domestic side.

(182,777 posts)if the Va Dems hadn't nominated someone that voters really saw as a relevant alternative we would have been stuck with George Allen AND possibly wouldn't have Senator Tim Kaine.
I didn't work on Webb's campaign but I did show up at his launch, shook his hand, and wished him good luck.

(15,241 posts)He quickly removed himself from another term which punched a big hole in the hopes of having a strong candidate for the next round.
Now he's apparently running away from trying to influence the presidential debates/discourse.
I hate to ask (since I might get shot), but is he a quitter?
Maybe his book sales are enough to keep him afloat.

(182,777 posts)He has had several best selling books and I am sure doing well on the speaking circuit. He is also retired Navy and has a Senate pension of some sort.

(18,402 posts)But I doubt many Democrats. So I wouldn't be too upset about an Independent run. Probably, he couldn't draw many votes at all. But even 1% could be a spoiler. I would hope it would be to the detriment of the Republicans.

(755 posts)No talk about veterans, no talk about defense spending. Webb brought clarity to that. I don't even think Bernie Sanders cares about military veterans in his stump speeches. Webb was not going anywhere, obviously, and he did not like campaigning anyway. He should go back producing films or writing books. But the Democratic Party will have to have a serious talk about the military vote, because it seems like the party does not want to speak to veterans and families of the military. Webb could have taken some voters from the GOP cuck-coo heads in places lie Bensonhurst/Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Bayside/Douglaston, Queens, and other blue collar areas. Bernie and Hillary needs to address military families and their neighbors, they need to address working class ethnics in
Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Macomb, Michigan. Time is of the essence.

(78,249 posts)Sen. Sanders believes that just as planes and tanks and guns are a cost of war, so is taking care of the men and women who we sent off to fight the war. It includes caring for the spouses and children who have to rebuild their lives after the loss of a loved one. It includes caring for the hundreds of thousands of veterans with multiple amputations or loss of eyesight, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. It includes veterans who are having difficulty keeping jobs in order to pay their bills, and it includes the terrible tragedy of veterans committing suicide. ...
Instead of cutting benefits for the men and women who have served our country, we should ask the most profitable corporations and the wealthiest among us to pay their fair share.
Sen. Sanders also strongly believes that we must end the travesty of veterans homelessness. While huge gains have been made over the past six years, the fact that on any given night there are fifty thousand homeless veterans on the street is a national disgrace. We also need to make further improvements to the VA disability claims process, which while significantly streamlined, still takes far too long for many veterans.
