Execution drug shortage makes some think of firing squads

Andrew Welsh-huggins, Ap Legal Affairs Writer

Updated 3:41 pm, Tuesday, October 20, 2015

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's decision to delay executions another full year while it hunts for lethal injection drugs highlights an ongoing dilemma faced by the remaining death penalty states.

Although support for capital punishment continues, states are struggling to find a legal means to carry it out, and that has created an opening for opponents hoping to end the death penalty permanently.

"It really underscores the public's growing distrust and dissatisfaction with state corrections departments being able to administer the death penalty," Kevin Werner, who leads Ohioans to Stop Executions, said Tuesday.

Shortages and legal fights over drugs and their source are occurring in several states, among them Arkansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Yet capital punishment supporters say older methods such as hanging, electrocution and the firing squad are still viable options.
"We've got plenty of electric and plenty of rope," said state Sen. Bill Seitz, a Cincinnati Republican.

They are not my friends.

I don't support bipartisanship with them.

I support putting them into the dustbins of history.

They truly are vile.

The kind of things politicians and companies can do often lead to the deaths of thousands or more people. White collar crimes can be much more harmful than any possible violent crimes.

The big problem with corporations is the limited liability.

We should have a literal corporate death penalty where we execute a company's entire board of directors, and it should be applied until corporations behave responsibly towards the public.

Instead of a needle and a simple button to push, in a quiet room hidden away from view, televise every execution. And do it Saudi style, with a giant sword.

Maybe even have a cheering crowd on hand.

Force Americans to deal with what our 'justice' system is doing.

It would be stomach-churning, as it should be.

..I have to agree with you.

If its done nice, neat and out of site...no one will say jack.

If its gruesome....then it might wake some up.

However, it could backfire.

...if the people cheering on convince others its ok and acceptable? It's time to pull an Einstein.

compared to being paralyzed on a gurney and given a chemically induced heart attack that may or may not cause me massive pain that I was unable to communicate.

The reason for lethal injection is not to be kind to the condemned inmate, it's to keep everything nice, clean and sanitary looking for the witnesses. Somebody is being killed but God forbid anyone sees a splatter of blood anywhere.

We know how to do it "humanely"; the Europeans just won't let us have the drugs.

They're forcing our hand, and it will probably work. Good.
