NOAA refuses to comply with House science committee subpoena

Source: Christian Science Monitor

In a study published in the journal Science in July, scientists indicated that average global temperatures have continued to rise in the 21st century, contradicting previous evidence that suggested a global warming hiatus. The analysis, based on temperature records from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, has now come under congressional scrutiny.

In July, the US House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology committee head, Rep. Lamar Smith (R) of Texas, asked NOAA for both data and internal communications related to the study led by Thomas Karl.

While NOAA conceded publicly available data related to the study, it has refused to release internal communications, citing the “long-standing practice in the scientific community to protect the confidentiality of deliberative scientific discussions,” as reported by Nature.

In response, Representative Smith filed a subpoena on October 13, a move which the Washington Examiner suggests is consistent with a “climate change doubter.”

The crass politicians will cherry-pick what they want, and crow to the media about it "proving" that Climate Change isn't happening.

If NOAA had complied (or does in the future) Smith, et al could do what you said. As it is, Smith can use their noncompliance to stoke the fires of paranoia.

NOAA is part of the department of commerce... Essentially government employees are telling the government that the government has no right to know what the government is doing and why the government is doing it.

Outside national security and personal privacy issue, government in the sun shine!

It is understandable the NOAA employees are pissed at the A.H. Subpenae, but they are government employees working on government programs.

.... hostile scrutiny could have an chilling effect on scientific deliberations. Since this is a scientific study not policy , , they should stick to the factual basis for the conclusions reached, not motivational issues - in this case I would equate that to an ad homium attack

sitting in the chairmanship of a committee, who gets position papers handed to him by some corporate lobbyists sitting behind him in the congressional room, who is more than likely a ALEC member and is also in my opinion of thought getting ready to leave and be a paid staffer working for the oil and gas industry.

I guess, just a guess now, that we the public demand and should have access to his emails that he is sending and receiving from the likes of ALEC, Americans for his Prosperity, Club for his Growth, American Oil Institute and other nefarious organizations.

I mean if you are going to go after one agency lets bring "everyone" that you are associated with to the table to raise there right hand and testify under oath, so that they can be cross examine.

I think that has a citizen paying his bills that we have a right to see what he has been sending and receiving to see how not impartial he really is, just a guess, because when you bring forth a hearing everything should be laid out unto the table for "transparency".

They want to attack the scientists and techs that did the research, look for some way to twist the facts and pretend that up is down.
