Denmark introduces controls at German border: PM

Source: AFP

Copenhagen (AFP) - Denmark announced the immediate introduction of random controls at the German border, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Monday, on the same day neighbouring Sweden introduced controls on its frontier with Denmark to stem the flow of refugees.

"When other Nordic countries seal their borders it can have major consequences for Denmark," Rasmussen said, referring to the Swedish measure.

"It can lead to more asylum seekers," he told reporters in Copenhagen.

Rasmussen has sought to limit arrivals of migrants on Danish territory, and he had hinted that he would react strongly to the systematic checks announced by Sweden.

2. Why should any country accept immigration without limit? We do not. EU countries have done their fair share.

I would like to see the countries bordering Syria (other than Jordan, who has done their fair share, too) to accept as many as Germany and other EU countries have.

"the countries bordering Syria" have taken in the vast majority of the Syrian refugees.

Arab states that are a lot closer than Sweden (who has absorbed more refugees per capita in the EU) should be doing much more.

Thanks for the information.

country. As liberal as Sweden is and as welcoming as they have been to the refugees, they must also implement liberal policies wisely. There is and will continue to be a backlash from conservative forces that need to be anticipated and rebuffed. Well-planned and implemented liberal policies make this easier to do.

The conservative governments in southern and eastern Europe have done relatively little to accept refugees.

The issue from the left side of the spectrum is that everyone can't have everything. The issue from the right side of the spectrum is that everyone can't have everything. That's why everyone has arguments.

As someone who lives in Germany, allowing all these refugees to come here openly with no limits, has truly got to be one of the biggest policy fuckups I have ever seen. I see Merkel out in 2017.

When you have run out of places to house people with any degree of safety, it's time to draw limits. Sweden's refugee system got swamped. Sweden is a small country - less than ten million people.

And Denmark is allowing people to claim asylum - the border checks are for those entering Denmark for Sweden, because if they can't go to their destination there is no point.
