Hezbollah claims attack on Israeli border patrol

Lebanon's Hezbollah movement said it had targeted an Israeli army border patrol with a bomb on Monday in an attack that prompted retaliatory fire from the Jewish state.
In a statement, Hezbollah said the attack in the disputed Shebaa Farms area along the Lebanon-Israel border "destroyed the armoured Hummer vehicle and injured those in it". It said the attack was carried out by a group named for Samir Kantar, a Hezbollah militant killed in an Israeli strike near the Syrian capital in late December.
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah had vowed to take revenge for the death of Kantar, who was notorious for the 1979 murder of three Israelis, had been freed by the Jewish state in a prisoner exchange in 2008.
Israel confirmed that its forces had been targeted in the border area after the attack.

A Lebanese pro-Hezbollah television station is reporting that Israeli troops were struck by a bomb along the border with south Lebanon.
Al-Manar TV says the explosion went off Monday in the Wazzani area, but gave no further information on whether it caused casualties. The Shiite militant group is known to operate in the area.
Residents along the border say shelling from Israeli tanks and artillery landed in agricultural areas inside Lebanon, with some 40 shells hitting the disputed areas of Ghajar village and Shebaa Farms. They did not report casualties. The residents requested anonymity, saying they feared for their safety.
There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

(45,850 posts)The Israel Defense Forces shelled the Lebanese border for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday, aiming to deter an attack by Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.
The groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has repeatedly vowed revenge for the assassination of arch-terrorist Samir Kuntar two weeks ago, which has been attributed to Israel.
Anticipating such a response, the army has been firing artillery rounds at the border fence. The army reportedly expected the terror group to take advantage of the stormy weather and the poor visibility to launch a strike.
