Meteorite older than earth found in outback Australia
Source: The Telegraph
Scientists in Australia recovered a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite in the outback after spotting it via a series of remote cameras, one of only about 20 to have been found after its orbit was identified
An ancient meteorite estimated to be 4.5 billion years old older than earth has been discovered in outback Australia after scientists tracked it to a remote lake bed and then launched a painstaking search aided by a drone, a plane and local Aboriginal guides.
The 3lb rock, which arrived from beyond the orbit of Mars, was tracked via remote cameras as it entered the earths atmosphere and landed on November 27.
It is one of only about 20 meteorites to have been recovered after its path was observed on camera, meaning that the scientists know where in the solar system it came from and can track it to its original asteroid.

Thank you.

(2,672 posts)They lose a lot of mass when entering the earth's atmosphere. Meteoroids can lose more than 95% of their mass during atmospheric passage. When they land intact after losing most of their mass, regardless of size (but if it's over 330 feet while still in space, it's called an asteroid), they're called meteorites.
It was probably about thirty pounds, give or take, when it was first spotted.

(62,444 posts)Not sure what weight has to do with it.
Many of the meteors you see are no more than pebbles.

Okay, the cameras were watching the streak, which, as you say, is easily visible to the naked eye. I had been under the impression that this thing was being tracked well out in space.
Thanks for writing.

Ussher gave us an exact time for creation you know so let's be accurate.
BTW I think my math is right assuming no year 0 but verification accepted.
