Jim Webb Hires Draft Biden National Finance Director Sam Jones
Source: 4President.org
Webb2016 has retained former Draft Biden National Finance Director Sam Jones to lead fundraising operations for Jim Webbs potential independent presidential candidacy.
While no firm decision has been made about a run, Webb and staff have conducted a thorough study of the process for gaining access to ballots in an environment where the Democratic and Republican monopoly of the complicated state-by-state rules are designed to deny voters an independent choice.
After weeks of study, including consultations with ballot experts and independent activists around the country, we have a handle on what it takes to give voters in every state a real choice, Webb spokesperson Craig Crawford said. We are so pleased that Sam Jones is coming on board to help us examine what is now the decisive issue: How to pay for it.
Jones, who lives in Dallas, TX, crafted a nationwide network of donors last year that was poised to significantly boost a Biden presidential campaign, but the Vice President chose not to run. Prior to that effort Jones has worked on the fundraising side for a variety of national, state and local campaigns.

(23,065 posts)He seems willing to destroy our country to salve his wounded pride. What awful karma he'd accrue if he runs as an Independent and throws the election to the Repugs.

(4,695 posts)what some would call, Republican-Lite (no way Biden could contradict his boss). So now we have a Right of Center Independent. I believe that the pre-April, more Centerist candidate for the Democratic Nomination, has moved Left, to be in step with the Sanders Campaign. Seems like this third way Independent campaign could replace the late 1990s presidential administration.
Great time for Sanders to come out on the attack of all of the Third Way Parties; those between himself and the Republicans.

(3 posts)Both major parties are scared to death of a third opponent, because they can't make devils of 2 opponents. The ballot laws are based on fear. But 3 are absolutely necessary in order to break the gridlock and force compromise - 3 is the only solution and will prevent any one party from having a majority everywhere.

(23,065 posts)Jim Webb would split the Dem vote, get little/no Repug votes and a few center left independents, throwing the election to the right wingers. When Perot ran, he ran from the right so split the right vote and Clinton won. 3rd party candidates aren't the answer, they just ensure that the party they are closest to in philosophy loses. Having 4 parties would be the answer to your issue, not 3.

(15,365 posts)I doubt that this will go anywhere. The Dem donors are already committed for the most part to one or another of the three Dem candidates. Webb has about the same changes as a snowball in hell as a third party candidate if he is able to mount a campaign at all.

(3,373 posts)that does not change the fact that Webb has no constituency unless it is Republicans who cannot stomach the idea of either voting for Trump/Cruz or Sanders/Clinton.
I think many Democrats may have a PUMA tantrum like we saw in 2008, but I suspect most will come home. I'm not as sure that all the Republicans will be able to unite behind Trump or Cruz. Webb might serve to draw the votes of those Republicans dissatisfied with Trump or Cruz but who might not be willing to vote for Clinton or Sanders.
I doubt Webb will get his third-party campaign off the ground, but if he does, there is little evidence that his candidacy holds much appeal for any measurable segment of the Democrat party or the Democrat-leaning independents (I truly believe he'd have polled better in the Republican primary than he polled in the Democratic primary; I ran across more Lessig supporters than Webb supporters when both candidates were still in the race).
