New York Police Sergeant to Face Internal Charges in Eric Garner Confrontation

Source: New York Times

A sergeant in the New York Police Department has been served with internal disciplinary charges for her role in the confrontation that led to the death in 2014 of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died after an officer placed him in a chokehold during an arrest on Staten Island.

Mr. Garner’s death, which has been under investigation by the United States Justice Department, illuminated the aggressive tactics of police officers in New York in confronting people suspected of minor offenses. A grand jury’s decision not to charge any of the officers involved fueled protests in New York and elsewhere and, along with several other police-involved deaths around the country, led to calls for an array of criminal justice reforms.

Police supervisors at the scene were faulted for never gaining control of the situation, in which Officer Daniel Pantaleo mounted Mr. Garner’s back and threw an arm around his neck, taking him to the ground as plainclothes officers tried to arrest Mr. Garner for selling loose cigarettes.

Mr. Garner, 43, died after repeatedly saying he was struggling to breathe. Representatives of Mr. Garner’s family, civil rights lawyers and others, including Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, called for reforms to the grand jury process, which is largely conducted behind closed doors.

the point that he died is the one who told them to "let up, you've already got him"?! (The ones who were on Garner did not listen to her and Garner died, so she is charged?

It was already apparent that there is something seriously wrong with law enforcement in NYC (and the rest of the country)... The wrongness seems to be very deep indeed.

Buffalo Cop Loses Job And Pension After She Intervenes With Fellow Officer Choking A Suspect

In Buffalo, New York a former police officer is fighting for her pension after being fired from the city's police department for interfering with another officer she claims was abusing an arrested suspect. Cariol Horne was fired from the force in 2006 and charged with obstructing another cop during an arrest over a domestic dispute, ABC 7 reported last week.

Horne claims that fellow Buffalo officer Gregory Kwiatkowski was abusing a suspect who had already been placed under arrest in handcuffs. "He was handcuffed in the front and he was sideways and being punched in the face by Gregory Kwiatkowski," explained Horne. Horne said she intervened when she saw Kwiatowski begin to choke the man. "I'm like, 'Greg! You're choking him,' because I thought whatever happened in the house he was still upset about so when he didn't stop choking him I just grabbed his arm from around Neal Mack's neck," said Horne.

in these types of cases tend to be POC versus white.

Meanwhile the excuse that will ultimately let the white killer go free -

The statute does not apply to Officer Pantaleo because his conduct is being reviewed federally and a “criminal aspect exception applies,” Mr. Davis said.

... and somehow, some way, they will convolute and manipulate the process so that he will be exonerated and at most, perhaps resign and move on to kill more black folk.
