Old Driver's License? You Can Still Fly for 2 More Years

Source: Associated Press

Fliers who don't have the latest driver's licenses will have a two-year reprieve before their IDs are rejected at airport security checkpoints.

Many travelers had been worried that the Transportation Security Administration would penalize them because of a federal law requiring newer, more-stringent IDs at the start of this year.

But late Friday afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security said passengers could continue using their current IDs until Jan. 22, 2018. Some would have until Oct. 1, 2020.

After those dates, passengers without the proper driver's licenses would have to use other federally-approved forms of ID such as a passport.

In my case that Certificate of Birth with my footprint on it and the hospital seal, is not birth certificate but a commemorative memento. Has to come from state's vital statistic bureau.

You only want to do the DMV line once but in my state DMV has greatly improved and mostly under half hour wait.

I made an appointment for my local So Cal DMV office.

Walked right in, did what was needed...bingity bang and was out of there in a short amount of time.

If your state allows...ALWAYS make an appointment.

But you check in telling them what you need. They assign you a number for that department. You sit in one of a thousand chairs and they call your number when they have a window open in that department. The employees are a lot less authoritative and very customer oriented and polite. They still are sticklers for the rules (that's their job) but are just more polite about it. Longest wait was an hour but I guess that was a busy day. Worst part was that the woman wouldn't take my credit card because it wasn't signed. Luckily I had the $50 in my wallet including my emergency money. Cash is king. Just had to stop at the ATM and get more.

Used to be you never knew which person of the 12 working there you would get. One inspection guy would say your windshield blades wipes are worn, get them fixed and come back, wait an hour in line again, and then I will pass you. Another would say, your windshield wipers are worn fix them up right away but I will pass you today but get it done. I understand failing someone for bad brakes but I think you can just tell someone to replace their windshield wiper blades right away and still give them a pass without making them wait in line.

Those little computer connection boxes that report errors also make inspection lines go much quicker. I know they are going to start recording your GPS location but they do get you through inspection quicker.

...I went to the nearest (5 minutes away) DMV office after making an appointment, and I was literally back home - not just done at the DMV - but back home within 20 minutes of my appointment - 5 minute drive to DMV office, 10 minutes at DMV with my appointment, 5 minutes back home!

I encourage the use of the CA DMV online appointment system, it truly works.

About 4 years ago when I went with my mother to get her State I.D. renewed they told us that it was only for international travel and you could still fly domestically with a regular driver's license. I couldn't find my Birth Certificate any where and would have to get from the bureau of vital statistics from my birth state. So I put it off thinking I could still fly domestically or get on a train. I'm glad for the extension and will have to get on that. I'm not sure when my current license expires but it is only a $10 fee to get it upgraded plus the documentation costs
(my mom had been married three times so her documentation cost were over $100 and she already had most of the papers that was for about three more. Plus the license fee, it adds up quick and is a lot of money to many people)
