Oregon standoff: FBI stages at Burns airport

Source: Oregon Live

Jan 09,2016 updated 1:17 pm

BURNS — The FBI has staged at the Burns Municipal Airport, blocking entrance to a U.S. Bureau of Land Management base there used to fight fires during the summer.

Men in FBI gear were posted Saturday in a sport utility vehicle along Airport Road about five miles east of the city, keeping cars and trucks from entering a BLM "SEAT Base" where another large vehicle sat equipped with FBI signage, numerous antennae, a satellite dish and other gear.

The men declined to answer questions or identify themselves and asked a reporter not to enter the SEAT Base on foot. SEAT stands for "single engine air tanker," a small agricultural airplane used to drop fire retardant on wildfires. Law enforcement officials have been posted there for days.

The FBI's presence was another reminder of the armed occupation more than 30 miles away at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which entered its eighth day Saturday. A group of militants led by Arizona businessman Ammon Bundy and joined Friday by an armed group of self-styled patriots from Idaho has commandeered the bird sanctuary to protest the federal government's ownership of public land in Harney County.

Arrival of rifle-toting 'Patriots' breaks relative calm at Oregon standoff compound

BURNS -- Ammon Bundy and his band of militants appeared ready to settle in for the long haul Saturday when a rifle-toting "security detail" broke the relative lull that had fallen over their weeklong standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

The morning began with a notable change in scenery. The ornate sign that used to greet visitors with "Welcome To Your National Wildlife Refuge" now advertised the "Harney County Resource Center" in white block letters over a blue background.

LaVoy Finicum, a prominent member of the Bundy crew, had just finished a speech about the sign when a convoy pulled up. Members of the Pacific Patriots Network, a consortium of groups from Oregon, Washington and Idaho, emerged from their cars and trucks carrying rifles and sidearms and clad in military attire and bulletproof vests.

Their leader, Brandon Curtiss, said the group came to "de-escalate" the situation .............

so these yahoos can't simply come & go as they please, resupplying themselves and/or
getting "care packages" brought in. It's ridiculous and it's an irresponsible waste of
tax money to allow this to drag out, having to guard airports 30 miles away.

This stinks to high heaven.

I'm not among those calling for bloodshed, but the FBI knows damned good and well how
to "smoke them out" as you say, or even starve them out, but no. It's just plain stupid to
keep this dragging out like this.

to mix the firefighting water with butyric acid:

Butyric acid
Butyric acid is present in, and is the main distinctive smell of, human vomit.

I think that alone would incapacitate quite a few of them

Canadia had a referendum in the 90s regarding the separation of Quebec.

And I vaguely recall an incident in the 1860s where white people tried a separatist movement and it was not tolerated.

And do you actually take a bunch of yahoos in a cabin as a real separatist movement?

to the Bundy's, then they rolled right up to the FBI encampment at the Burns airport, then they surrounded the courthouse and sheriff in Burns. Twitter has been keeping us informed by the minute all day.

Then they went to the Open-Carry Buffet for steaks and lobster. Bringing quiet and peace to rural Oregon is hard work if you are packing a ton of ammo.

but still, I doubt they have enough gasoline to last more than a few days or maybe a week.

But I do agree, these yahoos need to be surrounded by a wide perimeter of REAL law enforcement -- to
cut off their access to food, gasoline, and other supplies -- and to do it before even more "militia" posers
show up armed to the teeth, and this thing escalates into a full blown Waco.

"Militants are openly driving government-owned vehicles and heavy equipment around the compound, proclaiming that the trucks and backhoes now belong to the local community. The new sign outside the compound gives credence to the protesters' claim that Harney County residents now own all on-site buildings, equipment and supplies. ..."

This is way bigger than a bank robbery! I hope they like jail snacks.

We all had our laughs at #bluetarpman and his incompetent friends, and the Feds thought they could wait out those yokels. Now that people with real firepower (and I suspect skill in using them) have showed up, they know it can get ugly VERY quickly. If they had just rounded up those guys while they were driving into town and back for dinner, it could have all ended quietly. Now, I'm not so sure.

But Bundy and his corps of anti-government protesters didn't want their services.

Within minutes of their arrival, a man who said he was speaking on Bundy's behalf emerged from the occupied refuge headquarters and announced that the visitors had been asked to leave. Bundy didn't talk directly to reporters or appear at the daily morning briefing.

Todd MacFarlane, a Utah lawyer who said he was acting as a mediator for Bundy and the local community, told those gathered that Bundy was worried about the perception the group might create.

"We don't need that," MacFarlane told them. "We don't want it and we're asking you to leave."

Soon afterward, Curtiss and company piled into their 15 or so trucks and cars and left the refuge compound.
