The United States has sent a B-52 bomber on a low-level flight over South Korea in a show of force today after North Korea said it had tested a nuclear weapon.
The plane was flanked by two fighter jets, a U.S. F-16 and a South Korean F-15, as it flew over an air base close to the North-South border, the U.S. military said in a statement.
It added that the flight was "in response to recent provocative action by North Korea".
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un maintained that Wednesday's test was of a hydrogen bomb and said it was a self-defensive step against a U.S. threat of nuclear war.

(8,830 posts)Just like the old Cold War, complete with old Cold War era bombers.
If you listen, you can hear the echo of Curtis LeMay, chomping his cheroot and saying, "told you we should have bombed them in '52".

*My dad was one of LeMay's "atomic bombers" - he said the guy was brilliant and the best commander SAC ever had, but too trigger happy by half.

(22,000 posts)And although China has a legitimate beef with North Korea, they prefer to have a buffer between themselves and South Korea. That buffer is North Korea. China has and always will oppose the reunification of the two Koreas. It is also possible China would lay claim to some of the territory that is part of North Korea on a historical basis.

(22,000 posts)That's only 23.5 million people and 3/4th of the Korean economy that would be destroyed. It would be a very bad idea.

(1,076 posts)I've had a few opportunities to be around those BUFFs in my distant past on the ground and just off the flight path on a low altitude training run. I'm always impressed and in awe. Still am, with any aircraft.
Talk about force projection. Speak softly. You know the CinC was aware.

(1,134 posts)I understand a show of force in some cases, but I don't see what it does here. I can understand the theory behind why a country would send planes/ships into international waters that are being claimed by another nation. Maybe I just don't understand North Korea or something else.
