Legendary Artist David Bowie Dies at 69

Last edited Mon Jan 11, 2016, 03:28 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: Hollywood Reporter

David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief," read a statement posted on the artist's official social media accounts.

The influential singer-songwriter and producer dabbled in glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career.

Bowie’s artistic breakthrough came with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, an album that fostered the notion of rock star as space alien. Fusing British mod with Japanese kabuki styles and rock with theater, Bowie created the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

Three years later, Bowie achieved his first major American crossover success with the No. 1 single “Fame” off the Top 10 album Young Americans, then followed with the 1976 avant-garde art-rock LP Station to Station, which made it to No. 3 on the charts and featured Top 10 hit “Golden Years.”

Other memorable songs included 1983’s “Let’s Dance” — his only other No. 1 U.S. hit — “Space Oddity,” “Heroes,” “Changes,” “Under Pressure,” “China Girl,” “Modern Love,” “Rebel, Rebel,” “All the Young Dudes,” “Panic in Detroit,” “Fashion,” “Life on Mars” “Suffragette City” and a 1977 Christmas medley with Bing Crosby.

RIP. Mr Bowie

Is there life on Mars?

And, while we remember his many contributions to music--obviously the most significant contributions he made to world cultures--I'd also like to remember what a fine, sensitive actor he was. A real renaissance man.

And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away

We can be Heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that

Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time,
just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever
What d'you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing,
nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes,
just for one day

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads
(over our heads)
And we kissed,
as though nothing could fall
(nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes,
just for one day

We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying,
then you better not stay
But we could be safer,
just for one day

Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh,
just for one day

David Bowie has returned to his home after an all too brief sojourn amongst humanity.

The departure means that sadly it is the world that looks very different today.

He leaves behind a substantial body of work, including several autobiographical albums about the experience of being something more than human amongst mere mortals.
...
In response to the news, people worldwide are politely requesting that Tom Waits and David Attenborough go to bed early and take care of themselves, as there’s only so much of this we can stand.

Wake up you sleepy head
Put on some clothes,
shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me
I've made some breakfast and coffee
Look out my window and what do I see
A crack in the sky
and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they're
here to stay
What are we coming to
No room for me,
no fun for you
I think about a world to come
Where the books were found
by the Golden ones
Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned
What we were here for
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though
they're here to stay

[CHORUS:]
Oh You Pretty Things
Don't you know you're driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Oh You Pretty Things
Don't you know you're driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Let me make it plain
([second time:] Let me say it again)
You gotta make way
for the Homo Superior

Look at your children
See their faces in golden rays
Don't kid yourself they belong to you
They're the start of a coming race
The earth is a bitch
We've finished our news
Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay

In the mid 80's at the old outdoor Sullivan stadium where the New England Patriots played. It was an amazing performance and concert.

There was a documentary done about him.
If you get can a chance to watch it you will appreciate how brilliant he was even more.
He selected some very gifted musicians to play with him , a classic guitarist, pianist, etc. During their interviews it was obvious that they in awe if him. He pushed their musically boundaries beyond what the thought possible or their comfort zone.

morning! Just the other day...his birthday, Jan. 8. the DJ on the car radio was saying he has a new album coming out and he was probably, at that moment, in some tropical location with Iman! And now this!

I think he was a great influence, not just in music, but for this young girl growing up in the 1970s. Somehow a dude wearing make up made me see that is just a choice! Just because I was a woman did not mean I was forced to put on a mask if I did not want to. I am not quite sure how he made me this comfortable, but it did.

RIP Mr. Bowie! Thanks for sharing your talents with us!

I'm in my cubicle, and I have tears in my eyes.

It's Elvis Presley's, David Bowie's, and Kim Jong-un's Birthday.

From this morning:

Queen Bitch

"Queen Bitch" is a song written by David Bowie in 1971 for the album Hunky Dory.

Bowie was a great Velvet Underground fan and wrote the song in tribute to the band and Lou Reed. He recorded a studio cover of Reed's "I'm Waiting for the Man" in 1967 (which remains unissued), as well as live versions, which may be heard on Bowie at the Beeb and on Live Nassau Coliseum '76 (in the 2010 special edition and deluxe edition re-issues of Station to Station).

"Queen Bitch" starts with Bowie counting down to his acoustic guitar before Mick Ronson's thrashy guitar riff enters. The song's arrangement, featuring a melodic bass line, a tight drum pattern, choppy distorted guitar chords, and an understated vocal performance by Bowie, provided the template for the glam rock style that features prominently on The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, his seminal 1972 follow-up to Hunky Dory. While the main riff is similar to The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane", it is actually lifted from Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps to Heaven". (a posthumous #1 hit single in the UK in 1960).

Guitar chords, Queen Bitch, from Hunky Dory

So inviting, so enticing to play the part
I could play the wild mutation

I could do with the money
I'm so wiped out with things as they are
I'd send my photograph to my honey - and I'd c'mon like
A regular superstar

David… Your coming home… And we're sad you're leaving the stage!

Perhaps we could get Peter Schilling to do a cover of the original to go along with his sequel to Bowie's song… Here's his comments today on David's passing…

FUCK man, this is god-awful news to wake up to. I'm happy though he at least got to see the rave reviews of his last album before passing, they were pretty universally great. NONE of them I saw mentioned 'cancer' let alone 'imminent demise' so I gotta think this was a well-kept secret.

What a Sad, sad day. Lemmy, now Bowie ... a couple rock legends gone within weeks, both to the Big C. F*** Cancer, man.

RIP, Ziggy, Thin White Duke, Man who Fell To Earth, et al ... thanks for the amazing music. Ye will be missed.

I think we know what will be the last if not one of the last tributes for those who have passed shown at the Oscars in a few weeks!

And for those who think as a noted musician he wouldn't get the noted tribute at the end, check out his imdb page, and it's hard to find things he hasn't done rather than what he has done in both the music and film industries…

And for those doing the SyFy series "The Expanse" which is based on a series of sci fi books that documents what the future could be in 200 years from now with divisions of humans occupying the outer asteroid belts and Mars in addition to Earth, it would seem very nice if you could find a way to edit a tribute to Bowie in some fashion in a future episode, especially in the segments on the colonies in Mars in that series. Don't know if the series episodes are all in the can at this point, but it would be nice.

One of my favorites from Hunky Dory, such a melancholy song, a good eulogy for one of my first rock and roll heroes:

https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjUvM-pxaLKAhUINT4KHWuuBwwQyCkIHjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D8a82arE0JSQ&usg=AFQjCNEb_Zfxew_lDgBjPKdjEvmRW_CklA&sig2=Ioogxf62VoorUN1W6uhReg:

"The Bewlay Brothers"

And so the story goes
they wore the clothes
They said the things
to make it seem improbable
The whale of a lie
like they hope it was
And the Goodmen of Tomorrow
Had their feet in the wallow
And their heads of Brawn
were nicer shorn
And how they bought their positions with saccharin and trust
And the world was asleep
to our latent fuss
Sighing, the swirl through the streets
Like the crust of the sun
The Bewlay Brothers
In our Wings that Bark
Flashing teeth of Brass
Standing tall in the dark
Oh, And we were Gone
Hanging out with your Dwarf Men
We were so turned on
By your lack of conclusions

I was Stone and he was Wax
So he could scream,
and still relax, unbelievable
And we frightened the small children away
And our talk was old
and dust would flow
Thru our veins and Lo!
it was midnight
Back o' the kitchen door
Like the grim face
on the Cathedral floor
And the solid book we wrote
Cannot be found today

And it was Stalking time
for the Moonboys
The Bewlay Brothers
With our backs on the arch
In the Devil-may-be-here
But He can't sing about that
Oh, And we were Gone
Real Cool Traders
We were so Turned On
You thought we were Fakers

Now the dress is hung,
the ticket pawned
The Factor Max that proved the fact
Is melted down
And woven on the edging of my pillow
Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks
He could be dead, He could be not
He could be You
He's Camelian, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature
"Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky"
The Bewlay Brothers
In the feeble and the Bad
The Bewlay Brothers
In the Blessed and Cold
In the Crutch-hungry Dark
Was where we flayed our Mark
Oh, and we were Gone
Kings of Oblivion
We were so Turned On
In the Mind-Warp Pavilion

Lay me place and bake me Pie
I'm starving for me Gravy
Leave my shoes, and door unlocked
I might just slip away
Just for the Day, Hey!
Please come Away, Hey! [repeat ad inf.]

<on edit> Listening to this song I was always struck by the serious and somber mood created, the lyrics seem to be speaking to something of great import. And so the story goes; when Bowie submitted this song to his agent he said something along the lines of "These lyrics should leave all those American critics scratching their heads...". Gotta love a genius who can have a sense of humor about his own work!
