At least 10 people, most of them foreigners, have been killed in an explosion in a tourist area of Istanbul, Turkish officials say.
Turkish officials say a Syrian national carried out a suicide bomb attack in the Sultanahmet district, near the city's famous Blue Mosque.
Fifteen people were also wounded, the Istanbul governor's office said.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was the "top target for all terrorist groups in the region".

(15,480 posts)I'm surprised the bomber detonated in an open street/park instead of in or next to one of the iconic buildings there, like the Blue Mosque, Topkapi or the Hagia Sophia.
The Old City, Sultanahmet. Basically this tranquil area used to be the core of Roman Constantinople (it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453) and most historical sights are located here, such as Topkapi Palace Museum (a huge maze-like structure; to see the popular and elaborate harem go early in the morning to get a ticket); check out the lovely Ottoman street adjacent to Topkapi entrance; Hagia Sophia (an ancient mosque/cathedral); the gorgeous Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet); Museum of Islamic Art; the Hippodrome monolith; Sultan Suleyman Mosque; the Basilica Cistern; Kariye Museum also known as the Chora Church, the interior of which is covered in incredible frescoes and mosaics and adjacent to a dramatic section of ancient Theodosian walls; the Grand Bazaar.

(18,290 posts)Too afraid that if he cracked down on suspected ISIS members within Turkey, ISIS would then target Turkey.
And this is what happens when you play nice with terrorists.

(2,103 posts)The attacker in an explosion that killed at least 11 people in Istanbul, Turkey, this morning was affiliated with ISIS, Turkish officials said.
The suicide bomber was a member of the group, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, pledging to battle ISIS until it no longer remains a threat to Turkey or the world.
The alleged attacker is Nabil Fadli, born in Saudi Arabia in 1988, Turkish officials said. He recently entered Turkey through Syria, officials said. Fadli was not on a watch list, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said.
The blast happened near the iconic blue mosque in Sultanahmet, a historic, tourist district, around 10:20 a.m. local time. Some of the victims were part of a 33-person German tourist group that was at the site at the time.

(36,988 posts)Some more thoughts on the leaked tape from a meeting in the Turkish foreign ministry which is only very selectively reported in western media. A video with recorded voices and English text is available as is the seemingly complete text in two parts.
The setting of the recording is this:
The voices of the illegal recording believed to belong to Davutoğlu, National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Hakan Fidan, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu, and Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Gürel. According to the information obtained from sources, the recording consists of a chat between four officials in Davutoğlus office before the commencement of the official meeting with the participation of more civil and military bureaucrats in another room at the Foreign Ministry.

(33,310 posts)The main income source for vast numbers of Muslims. Egypt was first. Then Lebanon, Tunisia, and now Turkey.
The strategy is proceeding apace: draw the world into a climatic battle in the Levant. Erdogan is going to be forced to pick a side, finally. Hopefully he picks the one that confronts the Death Cult.
Thanks again, Bush.

(1,333 posts)Turkey has been the one to purposefully invite these evil men in hope they help the western backed rebels remove the Assad gov. I mourn the innocent who died but I do not feel sorry at all for the country. Talk about chickens coming home to roost.

(2,103 posts)Istanbul (AFP) - Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday said the suicide bomber who killed 10 German tourists in Istanbul had entered the country as an "ordinary migrant" from war-torn Syria.
"This person was not being followed (as a wanted suspect). This person entered Turkey as an ordinary migrant," Davutoglu said in Istanbul. "All his links will be worked out now."
