Oregon standoff: Harney County residents put disagreements aside, ask Bundy to leave
Source: Oregon Live (Oregonian)
Residents of sparsely populated Harney County on Monday night told armed outsiders to go home as they expressed fears about personal safety. At a community meeting, they also acknowledged deep rifts within the community, brought to the surface by the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

This is what happens when you let crap like this go on for too long. It may be a long time before this small community heals from this.
There is a video at the link of a high school girl crying while attempting to address a public meeting, saying "I shouldn't have to be scared in my own hometown".
I hope Bundy honors his word and accepts that they need to leave...NOW!

(8,175 posts)Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward accused militias Monday of harassing law enforcement officials and federal employees. Though there haven't been physical threats, he said, the alleged behavior is clearly meant to intimidate.
Since the occupation began, there have been reports of law enforcement being followed home or watched, Sheriff Ward said

Yesterday I read a story on OL where they (the militants) said it's not just federal land management they are fighting...it's federal government getting involved in what can be taught in our schools, and forced health insurance for all (the ACA).
These guys (the Bundys) remember are Mormons. They probably want this country to be a theocracy...or at least their states.

(40,656 posts)on its head in seconds. Don't give them a coup. Let them look stupid. In the end, they will have to cave and leave. There are rifts already in the groups. Eastern Oregon ranchers abound in my mom's family and my aunt lived in Burns until she died. This is a terrible thing.

(2,992 posts)That emboldened these twerps to hold an armed sit-in. (It's not really a stand-off if no one is standing on the other side.)
I get that the feds want to avoid a bloodbath. They ended up looking bad in the wake of Ruby Ridge and Waco, where children were killed. I also get that the SOTU address is tonight, and the feds almost certainly want to avoid anything that might go badly before that happens. But these people are breaking the law and should be treated as such.

Sit in is fine. Armed sit in is NOT fine!

(1,397 posts)Anyone who thinks these sonsabitches will be moved by local folks who simply want to be left alone is dreaming.
My 44 yr old son is a convicted felon -- poss of child porn, indecent liberties with a minor, and a few others.
After his conviction (he got six years probation), I cleaned out his guns, ammo, and related shit. It was a goddam fight -- even though he was a convicted felon, and even though he was looking at 5-8 years in the slammer for being a felon in possession of firearms, he REFUSED to let me take his guns.
On the day of his final probation hearing, his wife kept him busy while I went to the house and cleaned out guns, ammo, cleaning equipment, gun tools, cases, tactical vest, night vision goggles, etc., etc., etc.
I'm a retired Army infantry officer. He had more tactical weapons and shit than a lot of soldiers carry. The bed of my Ford F250 was full to the top with his military gear. Check out the photos of the Bundy militia and the Oathkeepers all decked out in their vests, radios, guns, ammo, etc. -- that's what he had. I even dug up 2,000 rounds of AR-15 ammo he had buried in the back yard in waterproof containers.
Anyway, I sold the guns and ammo and threw the rest of his shit in the local landfill.
He was FURIOUS. How dare I attack his manhood by taking away his toys. He is now out of the house -- my daughter-in-law has a protective order against him as do his sister and his mother and I.
Last year he was all ready to trek out West (we live in Virginia) and join the Bundy militia when he was arrested. Now he can't leave his home county because his probation officer checks up on him, unannounced, at least once a week. He texts me daily, praising the clowns in Oregon and threatening me because I disarmed him.
These people are twisted, sick, angry, blinded by fear and hate. They are dangerous; you cannot reason with them. It's all about guns, ammo, and the coming collapse of the nation, at which time they will band together to save us all from the rampaging gangs of blacks, Hispanics, and Muslims.
I'll likely be banned from DU for this statement -- but -- because of my experience with my son and a couple of his equally rabid friends, if they were shot down in the street like the mad dogs they are, I wouldn't shed a tear.
