Winning ticket for $1.5B Powerball jackpot sold in California; other states' results pending

A spokesman for the California lottery says a winning Powerball ticket was sold at a store in suburban Los Angeles.

Spokesman Alex Travesta said the jackpot-winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, about 25 miles northeast of Anaheim.

The identity of the winner is not yet known. It could take several hours before officials know whether any other winning tickets were sold elsewhere.

If there is only the one winner in California, that person could get a hefty payday, since the state does not tax lottery prizes.

A handful of people's nights just got a whole lot better.

Winning jackpot tickets in Wednesday's monster $1.5 billion Powerball drawing were sold in three states, California, Florida and Tennessee, according to California Lottery Deputy Director of Communications Russ Lopez.

One winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, officials said.

Details about where the winning tickets were sold in Florida and Tennessee were not yet known. Powerball is played in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The winning numbers were 4, 8, 19. 27, 34, with a Powerball of 10. The multiplier was 2X.

Record $1.6bn US Powerball lottery has three winners

There are at least three winning tickets in the US for the record $1.6bn (£1.1bn) lottery jackpot, officials have said.

The winning tickets in the Powerball jackpot were sold in California, Tennessee and Florida.

The previous draw was the 19th without a grand prize winner, which requires all six numbers to match.

Officials said it would take several hours to know if there are any other winning tickets.
