Planned Parenthood sues over undercover abortion videos

By Sarah Ferris
Planned Parenthood on Thursday filed a long-awaited federal lawsuit against the anti-abortion activists who have targeted the group with undercover videos for the last year.
The formal complaint marks the first time that Planned Parenthood has taken legal action against the group, the Center for Medical Progress.
The national organization, along with its California affiliate, is accusing the Center for Medical Progress and its organizer David Daleiden for unlawful behavior ranging from secret taping to trespassing. The group said the Center for Medical Progress has violated the laws of three states as well as federal law.
Today, Planned Parenthood is going on the offense, Kathy Kneer, president of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California said in a call with reporters.

(14,570 posts)These anti-abortion 'activists' need to be set back a few years. They've made FAR too many inroads to constricting the rights of women.

(13,776 posts)I'm happy to see that they're going on the offensive; I hope there's a way to bring in the fact that this group misrepresented what PP does, because that's what really needs to be confirmed in the public eye.

(23,338 posts)This might cause PP to open the books on all kinds of transactional details. And if they've sent some invoices, even if it's just to cover the costs of storage and shipping, it could be spun into a story of profits and sales.
Does PP hope to stop right-wing idiocy? There's a story about wrestling with pigs ...

(1,859 posts)Also, Planned Parenthood have to do this or this technique of doctoring footage will be used all over the place and for all causes. They're doing us all a favor by suing - and themselves in the favor for the future.

(3,051 posts)This will open them up to all kinds of discovery (documents and video depositions) and gives the Defendant a platform to air its views, with free publicity, to boot.
All those depositions, etc, will make for great Youtube clips.
Whoever PP's lawyer is, is an idiot.
The better approach would have been to put the truth out, then move on.

(10,570 posts)They are not suing saying they lied, they are suing for other reasons which side step discover on that front. Sounds like great lawyers to me.
"secret taping to trespassing" is what the case is dealing with.

(3,051 posts)But litigation is highly unpredictable. I would expect a counterclaim and a fishing expedition.

(953 posts)Going after the perps with a RICO case is strong medicine. The timing
is perfect, it will make headlines all year, I hope they win and win big.
Libel and slander can have rebound and richocet effects in court, so
they are very well advised to have dotted all the i's and crossed the t's.
It really has been an outrageously biased witch hunt all along, imo.
