Oscar nominations 2016: Complete list of nominees; ‘The Revenant’ leads with 12

Leonardo DiCaprio, Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Lawrence were among the nominees for the 88th Academy Awards, which were announced Thursday morning.
The Revenant topped all films with 12 nominations, including best picture, setting up best director nominee Alejandro Iñárritu for a potential repeat of last years Birdman success.
Best picture nominee Mad Max: Fury Road earned 10 nominations including a nod for George Miller for best director while The Martian raked in seven. Spotlight, The Big Short, Room and Bridge of Spies were also nominated in multiple categories.
In acting categories, many of the same stars who were honored during the Golden Globes on Sunday were nominated, including Brie Larson for Room, Matt Damon for The Martian and, of course, DiCaprio for The Revenant. There has been particular interest in that last potential nominee, given that DiCaprio has never won an Oscar and that movie was so grueling to shoot.

(23,338 posts)It seems like a weak year.
Just one bozo's opinion, stated with no spoilers.

as a person who has worked in the movies.... it's just the Academy.

(5,719 posts)It was an okay action flick, but nothing special.

(6,399 posts)I suspect it's a bit more than "an okay action flick"
There's a reason it has as many noms and critics nods as it does.

(5,719 posts)I was just whelmed. It was nothing we haven't seen before.
Another year of no new ideas.
Best films lately are from overseas.
Maybe showbiz nepotism is the problem?
Not in the showbiz so that's my worthless input.

(11,009 posts)Charlize Theron should've gotten a nod for best actress, and the guy who played Nux should have gotten a supporting actor nod.

(100,065 posts)Straight Outta Compton is easily the best bio picture I've seen in years. It's one of the few that really made you want more after it ends. The fact that it got snubbed is just a shame.

(20,758 posts)We got it from Netflix, and the giggles started about two minutes in.
By the time the guy on the big-wheel-truck was barreling along shooting flames out of the pegbox of his electric guitar, we were hooting so loud I'm surprised the neighbors didn't call the cops.
We turned it off then, and watched a re-run of a Season One "Foyle's War" episode to cleanse the palate.
The only conclusion we could draw is that we have emphatically aged OUT of Hollywood's "prime" audience demographic.

(1,000 posts)It amazes me that people still watch this ego fest.
So very predictable, so vey boring, so very white.

(12,977 posts)Call me crazy, but I like ridiculous musical numbers. A lot more than Hollywood stars engaging in pre-scripted banter or heartfelt but boring tributes to old fogeys.

The Revenant was awesome, but it's still in theaters -- ??
