Police arrest woman in deadly Arizona road rage shooting
Updated 5:09 pm, Sunday, January 17, 2016

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Police have made an arrest in connection with the deadly Arizona road rage shooting of a student visiting from China.

Tempe police Lt. Michael Pooley said Sunday that 32-year-old Holly Davis has been booked on three charges including first-degree murder.

According to police, Davis' vehicle was involved in a collision at a busy intersection around 2:40 p.m. Saturday. Davis allegedly got out of her car and fired several shots into the other vehicle, hitting Yue Jiang several times.

Pooley says Jiang lost control, crashing her vehicle into another car carrying a family of five. The 19-year-old woman was taken to a hospital where she died.

It also appears the murder was random. She rear-ended the victim, shot her, drove off to the apartment she shares with her boyfriend. (she also has a husband). She admitted OxyContin use to the police, the boyfriend said they had been drinking earlier. She asked the police to shoot her.

believe, it seems.

Note: Just because she said she uses them does not mean the drugs had a thing to do with it. It could also be the start of a defense, to keep from getting the death penalty for a hate crime.

It is called making excuses. Kinda like saying meth was the problem, then saying something else to keep from saying you were wrong.

bother some folks as much as others.

Most people say they are using drugs whether they are or not because it gives them an excuse. Otherwise it is their own fault, and we are taught from very early on to never, ever admit that.

For example, one might drive into and kill 4 people, and be held accountable, UNLESS they were rich, or on drugs, white, or whatever - those are all mitigating influences that courts often take into consideration to reduce sentencing.

for decades, before 1975 when I moved there. and there have been all sorts of things like this.

The one that happened after I got there was two "slow" twins with .357s were cut off in traffic on the Black Canyon freeway by a guy who was following a disabled vehicle. When traffic stopped a few feet up from the ramp, the two parties started yelling. The single driver got out and got a baseball bat. The twins got out and pulled iron. The guy put the bat down in the truck bed and raised his hands and backed off. The twins each shot him and killed him.

The twins got off and got their revolvers back.

until we figure out how to stop this insane road rage crap going on.

Of course only law abiding citizens will follow the laws that restrict them from having a gun in the car. She was restricted from having a gun and she had one anyway.

Yes, I know I'm fooling myself if I can imagine any law like this passing. Hey, if you have a gun it needs to be unloaded and in the trunk of your car. Is that good enough?

According to police reports, she hid her vehicle and her weapon before returning home to her Mesa apartment, showering and washing her clothes.

She certainly was not too drugged up to know she was in big trouble and took actions to hide the evidence.

Davis was previously convicted for resisting a lawful stop and fleeing in Missouri, according to arrest reports. She was sentenced to three years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

on everyone being armed it so easy now to just shoot. I have been fighting over the issue that the NRA and gun rights advocates do not push body armor also. Since most killers wear body armor and the victims are not. The NRA has been running ads urging everyone to be armed, but no mention about wear body armor. Maybe it needs to be the new style of dress.
The road rage in AZ has been shooting or people just running over those they were mad at. We have had cases where the people in the rage followed the other vehicle home and killed the person there.

But the NRA presses on without any push back about who can get guns. Road Rage or having a temper is never discussed.

I may have discussed this before on another thread - not sure. But I think back to Florida in the 1980's. There was a series of high-profile violent crimes against tourists from overseas. Several tourists were killed, and the murderers were sometimes teenagers. Florida quickly enacted several laws intended to address the problem, including allowing prosecutors to charge juveniles as adults. (Whether this is a good idea is whole 'nother discussion.)

Part of the reason action was so swift was international pressure. Several European countries issued travel advisories against visiting Florida. There are lots of special interests in Florida, but tourism is perhaps the biggest. It's one of the few that can fit the NRA between its fingers and crush it. When tourism dollars were under threat, Florida jumped, and jumped fast.

If enough parents of murdered international students start speaking up, their governments might start warning their citizens against visiting states with open-carry and stand-your-ground laws.

The impact of international pressure is going to vary by state. My upper midwest state has essentially no tourist industry, and thus its legislature wouldn't respond the way Florida's might. The same is presumably true of Arizona. But it isn't all tourism.
I work at a large public university that depends, in part, on tuition dollars from international students. Students continue to apply here because of its reputation for quality education and a welcoming environment. A violent act, like what happened in Tempe (the girl was an Arizona State student), would do real damage to that reputation. The state legislature would notice.

(I realize that, as written, it almost looks like I'm hoping for more such incidents. I absolutely am not. I'm only pointing out that, as gun violence continues in the US, our neighbors in other countries might have something to say about it.)

I know I'm a cynic, but Gabby Giffords was an AZ Congresswoman, and they don't give a crap about that shooting, either.

There could be 1,000 similar shootings for 1,000 days straight and they'd still cling to their Guns. They create the conditions they fear.

And AZ is far from alone in that.
