Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin suggested Wednesday that President Barack Obama was to blame for the arrest of her son Track on domestic violence charges.

Palin noted during a political rally in Tulsa that her 26-year-old son had served in Iraq. “My son, like so many others, they come back a bit different. They come back hardened,” she remarked in a video published by Right Wing Watch.

Palin said her son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and that Obama had made his situation worse by allegedly disrespecting veterans.

“They come back wondering if there is that respect for what their fellow soldiers and airmen and every other member of the military have given so sacrificially to this country, and that starts at the top,” she explained. “It’s a shame that our military personnel even have to question, have to wonder if they’re respected anymore. It starts from the top. The question, though, it comes from the top, the question, though, that comes from our own president where they have to look at him and wonder, ‘Do you know what we go through? Do you know what we’re trying to do to secure America and to secure the freedoms that have been bequeathed us?'”

That comment is just not true. Maybe during the Vietnam War military men and women wondered if they were respected by this country, but that did not happen with veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. This country made a great effort to make sure this generation of fighting men and women were respected and knew they were respected. People applauded as military men and women walked through airports. People gave up first class seats for military men and women. Restaurants gave free meals to veterans and active duty personnel on Veteran's Day. There were multiple efforts to give those deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan welcome home parades. The GI Bill was updated in order to make it easier for those who joined the military after 9/11 to attend college without going into debt. People like Pat Tillman were hailed as heroes. Chris Kyle was given a memorial service at Cowboys Stadium.

I believe just about every man and woman who joined the military after 9/11 knows they are respected by both the country and President Obama. After all President Obama has hosted military members, veterans, military children, military wives/husbands, and military widows/widowers at the White House on multiple occasions. It is very sad that instead of Sarah Palin trying to help her son get through this time in his life she decided to use the incident to attack President Obama.
