GOP Lead-Poisoning Truthers Say Flint Water Crisis ‘Vastly Overstated’ — And Might Even Be ’A Hoax’

A Michigan Republican suggested that Flints water crisis wasnt all that bad and might even be a hoax during a lunch meeting of business leaders and elected officials.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said Tuesday during the Detroit Economic Club luncheon that the water crisis had been vastly overstated, reported the Detroit Free Press.
Blood testing has found dangerously high levels of lead in Flints children after the cash-strapped city stopped buying pretreated Lake Huron water from Detroit and instead began drawing highly corrosive water from the Flint River.
Patterson, however, said a GOP political analyst and former lawmaker who lives in Flint had opened a debate on the scandal during a radio interview.

(26,249 posts)They were offering these up at the protest, last night. Funny, they didn't even have to warn us to not drink them. Great visual props for shaking in the Governor's direction. Too bad he pretended he didn't even realize we were there.

There is no safe level of lead.

(34,661 posts)mostly Cast Iron Pipes. The more progressive Cities are replacing or are in the process of bidding for replacement of their old Cast Pipes. And by switching to Detroit Water Service will help after the whole system is flushed thoroughly. Got a hunch the Water Mains might be beyond salvage if what we are told it all started 24 months ago. Never heard so much Bull C rap from their Governor in interviews today. Hundred kids with high levels of lead . How about a hundred thousand residents with elevated lead levels. His P.R. person needs a raise, for that one.

Some interesting information from the Wikipedia on Ex Mayor Dayne Wailing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayne_Walling
Dayne Walling (born March 3, 1974) was the mayor of Flint, Michigan from 2009-2015. Although the Flint mayor's office is a nonpartisan position, Walling is a member of the Democratic Party.[2]
In 2014, the City of Flint began undertaking a water supply switch-over from Lake Huron to the Flint River.[13] After the switch was made, residents immediately complained about the smell, taste, and color of the water, as well as skin problems after bathing.[14][15] State and city officials reassured the public that Flint's water was safe, with Mayor Walling personally testifying to its safety by drinking the water on local television and tweeting that him and his family drink Flint water every day.[16][17]
The water supply was at the center of the November 2015 election.[16] Despite reassurances from officials, investigations revealed Flint's new water supply to be extremely corrosive and contain levels of lead high enough to meet the EPA's definition of toxic waste.[18][19] Doctors voiced concern that those exposed may suffer permanent and lifelong injury and will need to be tracked for years to measure the full scale of the damage.[20] Walling ultimately lost his re-election bid to Karen Weaver.[16][21][22]

(1,752 posts)spin it. After all, its kinda hard to demonize Obama and the feds when you're groveling to them for money. But when in doubt -attack the science.
EPA standards for safe drinking water is 15 ppb. 5000 ppb is declared a toxic waste site. Some residents water was testing an incredible 31,000 ppb. Overstated? Don't think so.

(50,236 posts)A GOP weasel was on CNN a little while ago and he was pretty much saying the kids who currently have elevated blood lead levels are the total of the entire problem (ludicrous). He also cited a study by someone who was a head of GM that said it's pretty much a nothing burger . . . then Chris Cuomo reminded him GM had to find a new water source because the Flint River water was corroding their newly manufactured car parts. Didn't phase the weasel one bit.
