Bill Clinton Attacks Bernie Sanders on Planned Parenthood and Health Care

By MATTHEW CLAIBORNE

................

Bill Clinton didn't mention the senator from Vermont by name but regularly referred to him as "her opponent." He struck hard on Sanders, attacking him on calling Planned Parenthood part of the “establishment." The Clinton campaign, who has the endorsement of Planned Parenthood, pounced on this.

“If you elect Hillary president, it will be a great day when you stop her from defunding Planned Parenthood,” Bill Clinton said today. “Hillary Clinton does not consider Planned Parenthood a member of the establishment.”
.........................

“On health care, Hillary thinks we should remember how important the Affordable Care Act is,” began the president. “Her opponent says, no, we should scrap that and go into a single-payer system.”

The president was referring to Sanders’ plan to pay for a single-payer system that he release released moments before the last Democratic debate. The president called the senator’s plan unsustainable, saying it encourages “overcharging and inflation.”

The president quickly shifted gears to the college students in the room....................

I also saw the piece by Rachel. I was stunned that Sanders has started sounding like many of his supporters by throwing two wonderful organizations under the "establishment is bad" bus because he did not get their endorsements.

Just aligned themselves with a very conservative Democratic establishment, and that is no one's fault but their own. The one that is currently doing everything it can to denounce single payer healthcare as communism, the one that threw homosexuals under the bus until it was no longer politically expedient, the one that will abandon planned parenthood if polls ever shift against them.

I understand why, it's the practical thing to do, Clinton is a near lock for the nomination, and the Democratic establishment has all the power and privilege to help an organization out. But it's not a principled move, and many see it very clearly.

Indisputable.

Doesn't mean the original goals of the organization, that the rank and file try (at risk to life and limb) to fulfill, and the people they serve, are "establishment."

Forgive me if I don't defer to the former groper-in-chief for moral authority on women's rights.

There are some rules now to prevent most of this but the overcharging for drugs was totally mandated by congress when they passed the Medicare D law which explicitly bans Medicare from negotiating costs. So Medicare & it's recipients pay far higher costs for drugs than the Medicaid program does. Think Tricare also negotiates prices, so add them to this picture. This would need to radically change for Medicare for all to work effectively. They'd also need to do the hard work of ending fee for service and pay for outcomes instead. Otherwise, again, yes Medicare is driving overuse.

This is a repeat of 2008 and the silly Obama attacks that caused a huge rift in the party and the eventual loss of the primary for Clinton. Doesn't Bill want to talk about reparations???? Oh . . . I forgot . . . Bernie and Bill share the same view on that so no faux scandal there.

I don't think that Bernie ever said he'd defund PP, if he did I totally missed it. Really hope he never even hinted at that. I'm a big PP supporter, regardless of who Ms. Richards likes personally. It's a great organization that does a ton of good. I disagree with Bernie that it's part of the "establishment", but since that fits most of HRC's endorsers, think it got shoehorned in wrongly. Wish he hadn't said that, but on the other hand, he is a politician and although he's usually above that, guess he had a bad moment.

what would be the purpose of federal funding for PP?

Why wouldn't PP endorse a candidate opposed to single payer?
