Donald Trump: "The whites don't get any nominations" from BET
Source: CBS News
.........
The former television star called it "sad" that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences failed to name any black nominees in the top four acting categories for the second year in a row. But he also dismissed calls for an awards show boycott, proposed earlier this week by Rev. Al Sharpton.
"I think it's a tough situation. I think it's really sad," Trump said. "And you know, Al is just a guy who wants to get publicity for himself. And I understand him very well."
........
The GOP front-runner went on to praise an earlier interview with Fox News contributor and actress Stacey Dash, who proposed abolishing networks like Black Entertainment Television in the name of equality.
"I saw somebody on your show today saying, 'Well, what do we do with BET?'" Trump said. "Over there, the whites don't get any nominations." "I thought it was an amazing interview actually," he continued. "I'd never even thought of it from that standpoint."

T-rump is certainly doing his part to ensure that repubs remain the old white man's party.

Because every other channel is pretty much white TV.
Fuck these conservatives are brain dead.

I sort of understand her motive, trying to push some "post-racial" reality. The world is just not there yet.

apparently Trump thinks Oscars is whites only. comparing ot to an awards where it's one race or whatever. meh he could have a point if not for the fact that we have a history of racism. In a perfect world BET wouldn't need to exist, but he's thinking of this wrong. He's assuming white based movies are well liked by other races and vice versa. True there are alot of black themed movies that I'm not fond of. However I do think they are great movies just not my forte. There is a difference there. Course I'm sure he'd love to get rid of certain HISPANIC language only channels gosh I wonder why smh

(1,054 posts)They feel marginalized. and since they are white males most liberals laugh and scoff at them when they try to express that feeling (often incoherently). I'm speaking from direct experience of some of the guys I grew up with.
Accuse someone who is already depressed, under employed, and with little hope, of having "white privilege" (and I'm not debating the usefulness of that concept when discussing macroeconomic phenomena, it is statistically provable) and the 'us' versus 'them' message that Trump paints becomes a clarion call.
One can roll out statistics all day about how they have it better being white males from a middle class background, all you do is convince them that we progressives are ivory tower dipshits out of touch with the person flipping burgers who is never going to have the standard of living they grew up with, white skin or no.
Trump does a brilliant job of speaking go his target audience. The repugnancy of his message should not make us lose sight of that fact. Underestimating the enemy is how we got fucking Reagan

(1,260 posts)The poster gives Trump supporters way too much credit. "They like Trump because they are disenfranchised, they are flipping burgers to pay the bills, they don't have the lifestyle that they grew up with". Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
That's completely inaccurate. I work with and live around many Trump supporters. They are engineers, technicians, managers at all levels, HR personnel, bankers, Sales reps, and accountants. Some own their own business and live in the same $400-600K neighborhood that I live in. I hear their putrid verbiage at HOA meetings.
They aren't broke. They don't rent, they own. In fact, they own rentals. They brag about their getaway cabins in Sedona and Flagstaff. They drive $40K pickup trucks, SUVs, and boats.
Their finances have absolutely nothing to do with their support for Trump. They are bigots. They don't like how the "complexion" of the US is changing. They look down on the truly disenfranchised. They can't stand the thought of our troops taking orders from a woman, or heaven forbid, a socialist. One $100K/year colleague and Trump supporter told me "It's the USSR all over again if that happens!"
This sympathy for Trump supporters is disgusting, ignorant, and naïve. I'm starting to believe that it's even manipulative. Trump supporters are bad people, at every income bracket. The don't see their country slipping away to big corp media and banks. They just hate Blacks, Latinos, Asians, women, heathens, and homosexuals.
No, they aren't stupid. They are a disgrace. I know it's difficult for some of my fellow liberals to believe that people like this still exist in America. Some Trump supporters may be family members or long time friends from the old neighborhood. Well if that's the case, then you have family members who are evil to the core. Make piece with it and WAKE THE FUCK UP! If you give any broke Trump supporter a 6 figure job, a sweet pension, and free college tuition for their kids, they will still support his vile.

(19,356 posts)Trump is a phenomena which appeals to a number of different type of individuals for different reasons.
I think you're both right except when you imply there is a single (or a few) basic types.
Many are uneducated AllTooEasy suggested. And they are truly disturbed about their lives and they way they think the country is going.
I'm elderly and have a many who mows my lawns. His is a formerly deputy in a small town in Southern Louisiana, is married to an African American woman (who often works with him), and is terribly religious. He's a nice man.
One day, after my grandchildren had gone home after a long visit, I asked him how his family was.
He started crying in my drive. He told me his daughter was gay and lived with another woman in a city an hour or so distant. He was terribly affected and couldn't stop crying, telling me how his religion wouldn't abide such.
The reason I bring him up is that the incident made me realize just how many people (often undereducated and poor) strongly and emotionally hold "values" which are used by politicians to mobilize them. I'll not blame my friend, but those politicians and preachers who manipulate him to the point he has severed relations with his daughter (I'm working on that, by the way).
Yes, many poor and lower-middle class flock to Trump for the reasons AllTooEasy mentioned. And they do so out of deep emotional dislocation and fear.
But, yes, many others support him as well and their motives are different.
The issue of culpability is difficult.

Underestimate that douchbag at our peril; he's a brilliant demagogue with seriously motivated supporters.
As a matter of fact your post makes for an interesting, and scary, data point. I don't know may people like you apparently live and work with, social work doesn't pay too well, but if he has that kind of support from the UPPER middle class, as well as the lower middle class, we could be in for Reagan II.
If you would be so kind, for my personal enlightenment, as to how I am 'giving them too much credit'? If you are calling me personally "disgusting, ignorant and naïve" I think you are attacking the wrong person and would rather like an apology, if not, never mind.

(11,487 posts)If we take for granted that voters will see T-Rump for the bigoted asshole that he is we have a very real danger of giving him the keys to the White House.
I was at first very surprised that my cousin (who is lesbian) would support someone like T-Rump, but she falls into the category of being underpaid, barely making ends meet, and has bought into the us vs. them message.

(3,263 posts)are young and not doing as well as the middle class white world they were born in , or moving up they think "others" or government are the issues
IMO In reality born post UofC Reaganomics they haven't a clue that those
others are not the hand that is keeping them down, and how much labor, those who work, have lost in gains their forefathers made to live comfortably middle class.
The 'others' are not fairing much better or worse and flipping burgers beside them or scrubbing the toilets where they are flipping burgers ,but there is a class of mostly white wealthy that they never think has the greater impact on their lot on life and the wealthy like the lower class divided.
And yes don't think he just appeals to old white men only and guffaw . I believe he could win if ignored by the opposition

(2,841 posts)I've noticed a lot of the Trump fans point to the "politically-correct" clickbait that you see on places like Yahoo as proof that white men are being "marginalized". They'll use things like "white privilege" and all of the protests on campuses as leverage to vote for Trump with the hope that one day, Trump will "take care" of the "pc police".
And I'm using all of the quotation marks because this is the kind of stuff I've read on reddit in regards to Trump and his fans. :/

(18,652 posts)The best private schools and colleges will take you, whatever your ethnicity, as long as you can pay full cost. Trump loves the Chinese and even Mexicans as long as they're wealthy but if they're poor economic refugees, send them back where they came from is his motto.
Bet supports and awards black entertainers and whites like trump think that's racist? C'mon, that is just stupid.

(1,178 posts)I, once again, have been overlooked by BET. Just because I am white and have never been involved in the entertainment business doesn't mean I don't deserve a nomination in Trumpworld. Come to think of it, I haven't been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics, either. Do I need to do anything to qualify for that? Anyone got Donald's number so I can ask?
