Ex-Oklahoma officer gets 263 years for rapes, sex assaults

Source: AP

By SEAN MURPHY

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A former police officer convicted of raping and sexually victimizing women while on his beat in a low-income Oklahoma City neighborhood was ordered Thursday to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Jurors had recommended that Daniel Holtzclaw be sentenced to 263 years in prison for preying on women in 2013 and 2014. District Judge Timothy Henderson agreed, said Holtzclaw will serve the terms consecutively and denied his request for an appeal bond.

Holtzclaw waived his right to remain in custody in the county jail for 10 days, instead opting to be taken directly to prison. Defense attorney Scott Adams said Holtzclaw "is going to pursue his appellate rights, which he is entitled to."

Holtzclaw was convicted last month on 18 counts, including four first-degree rape counts as well as forcible oral sodomy, sexual battery, procuring lewd exhibition and second-degree rape. He was acquitted on 18 other counts.

I would just like him to live in an extended period of significant fear, discomfort and humiliating subjugation.

263 years ought to do it.

On one hand, I want to see this guy severely punished for his crimes, which are disgusting. On the other hand, it is responsibility of prison officials to protect the lives and safety of the people incarcerated there. If my brother was in prison, no matter how horrible his crime, I'd like to think he'd be protected from a prison rape or stabbing.
But a cop that has violated the community's trust in him, and harmed so many women is just slightly above pedophiles in the prison totem poles. He isn't going to find any allies on the inside. So his "life in prison" may be a year.

Why do people forget that for every prison rape there is a prison rapist?

I'm surprised this story didn't generate more media coverage. It could be because his victims were mostly low-income minority women. However, a white ex-cop convicted for preying on AA women? He won't be able to step outside of his cell and I can't really work up any sympathy for his plight. These predators with badges are society's worst nightmare.

And good to note that this news hasn't attracted much attention here on DU, BECAUSE THIS IS HOW OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.
