Good Samaritan shot to death by stranded man he was trying to help in Catawba County
Source: Winston-Salem Journal
A good Samaritan was fatally shot Friday by the man he was trying to help in the Bandys community of Catawba County, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
The car driven by the shooter, Sheriff Coy Reid said, had slid off icy Mathis Church Road and was stuck, when a passing car with two or three men stopped to help about 5 p.m. Friday.
The shooter became belligerent toward the men. They thought he was drunk and said lets just call the law and let them deal with it, Reid said.
As they walked to their car, the shooter pulled out a pistol and started firing. One of the men fell and the shooter walked to him and shot him numerous times, the sheriff said. The shooter returned to his car as deputies arrived. They shouted for him to get out. When he didnt, they called in a SWAT team. The team pulled their armored vehicle up to the shooters car and saw that he was passed out, Reid said.

(16,296 posts)Every time I hear of something like this , I am reminded of the times I had to take my shoes off going thru airport security and how that one asshole changed the entire boarding experience of millions upon millions of people.
Things like this HAS to have an impact on a society - thanks NRA for arming all those idiots. Now when we see a car in distress, a person MAYBE needing help, etc. - we are (at least I am) going to think twice about offering help.
The good Samaritan indeed is going to be a thing of the past and that is sad.

(14,691 posts)too many seem to have a profoundly twisted mindset which permits them to kill as they see fit. These people don't purchase a gun for protection with the hope they'll never have to use it.

(14,691 posts)it was hard for me to find the words as it was. The decent people who own guns (I do think there are some) find common cause with the others and the issue gets very muddied.

(7,512 posts)would they have bothered to ask him to get out of the car or would they have just lit the fucking thing up? Somehow I think I already know the answer.

What prompted one stranded motorist, Marvin Jacob Lee to kill an individual who had come to his aid? Pictured from left to

Marvin Jacob Lee, 27 has been charged with murder after shooting dead passing motorist, Jefferson Heavner who had sought to assist the man who had become stranded after his car spun out of control along a North Carolina road.
The charge against the belligerent man comes after cops telling Lee struck Heavner once before standing over him and shooting him numerous times.
Jefferson Heavners death comes after the Good Samaritan was one of a group of people, including neighbors and a passing truck, who went to help when they saw a car spin out and become stuck on a Catawba County road around 5.20pm amidst the grips of winter snow storm Jonas.
To the groups surprise, Lee began to become belligerent, leading to the group deciding to call for police for assistance, told a statement via Sheriff Coy Reid.

(19,240 posts)We need the same safety laws for guns that we do for cars. Anyone drunk waving a gun around goes to jail whether they shoot anyone or not. All gun owners have to have insurance for when they stupidly shoot or kill someone accidentally. They all have to take a gun owners class. No one drinking is allowed to carry a gun and if you are carrying a gun you do not get to drink--not to the point of intoxication. And a conviction for carrying a gun while drunk gets your gun license yanked. This is a clear matter of public safety.
The first amendment does not give you the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater. The second does not give you a right to use a gun while drunk.

I don't think I'll do that anymore.
