HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba's tourism industry is under unprecedented strain and struggling to meet demand with record numbers of visitors arriving a year after detente with the United States renewed interest in the Caribbean island.

Its tropical weather, rich musical traditions, famed cigars and classic cars were for decades off limits to most Americans under Cold War-era sanctions, but those restrictions are fading.

Once a rare sight, Americans are now swarming Old Havana's colonial squares and narrow streets along with Europeans and Canadians.

When I traveled in Europe, there are individuals who rent offices near train stations that offer tourists to stay with local families. They charge a fee. You pay them and they give you a voucher and address. I guess the families then go and collect on that voucher.
Most back packers including myself would rather stay with a local family to really learn the culture. Also included are dinner and breakfast. Good deal all around.
If I start such a business, I would use the internet to promote.

and those with internet do much better than those without.

In fact it's assured that one will always find a room since those without internet rely on people essentially finding them via word of mouth.
