Obama Takes First Step in a Cancer ‘Moonshot’

Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON — President Obama signed a presidential memorandum on Thursday creating a White House task force on cancer, the first step in what Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has called a “moonshot” to cure the disease, administration officials said.

The president appointed Mr. Biden to lead the panel, which will include representatives from at least 13 government agencies. The group’s first meeting will be on Monday, officials said.

The emotional power behind the push will come from Mr. Biden, whose son Beau died last year after a battle with brain cancer. This month in his final State of the Union address, Mr. Obama cited Mr. Biden’s “moonshot” comment, saying that “I’m putting Joe in charge of mission control.”

Mr. Obama pledged in the speech to initiate a governmentwide push to cure the disease along the lines of the effort in the 1960s to send a man to the moon. The president made no specific promises but urged Americans to believe that a cure could be found.

in hospitals, on expensive cancer drugs, etc. Of course, they like families to be in pain and begging. It really is sad.

Every President has called for a war on cancer and many of them have claimed a cure is around the corner. And it seems mostly Big Pharma ends up offering unafordable treatment with little improvement.

Some ideas, don't let corporation pollute our air, water, and food.

we need prevention since much of it is symptomatic of the toxins we are applying to the planet. Humans in other words are just canaries in the coal mine.

Because they won't ever find a cure with big pharma. They have to get their money grubbing asses out of the picture, deal with cause and prevention. There are lots of cures that are suppressed.

because there are so many different types of cancers, that it's probably not possible to have a single one size cures all thing. So we end up getting treatments/cures for specific types of cancer instead of a super treatment.

Drug companies have no motive to want a cure and many universities are beholden to drug companies for funds.

We're using up lots of resources treating each form of cancer (breast, lung, pancreatic, etc.) as a separate disease. What we need is to understand the process of metastasis and why it moves much more quickly in some organs than others. ("More men will die with prostate cancer than of it.&quot

because that's the disease that will bankrupt this nation. Not only do Alzheimer's patients live a long, long time with the illness, they require years of supervision and drain the resources of families. 5 million patients already, and climbing.

we need to 'prevent' it. Much of it is caused from the toxins we are applying to the planet.
