JERSEY SHORE ROCKED BY SONIC BOOM, USGS AND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONFIRM

Source: 6abc

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- A sonic boom rocked towns along the New Jersey coastline Thursday. The source of the blast, however, remains unclear.

The event reportedly happened around 1:30 p.m. and was felt from southern New Jersey to the Eastern Seaboard to Long Island, New York.

Despite what was felt and heard, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, it was not an earthquake - it was a sonic boom. The National Weather Service also confirms that it was a sonic boom.

The USGS also says there were at least 9 sonic booms recorded during an hour and a half span.

They have been flying them out of Edwards or Groom Lake for over a decade.

This could be the next generation by this time.

Which makes more sense as opposed to one

The Navy issued a statement late Thursday, saying aircraft were "conducting flight testing in the Atlantic Test Ranges this afternoon that included activities which may have resulted in sonic booms."

Here's a map from the USGS that shows where reports of ground shaking have come in:

28. Test Flights of F-35 Fighter off N.J. Coast Caused Sonic Boom: Report
Thu Jan 28, 2016, 07:53 PM
Jan 2016

A sonic boom that rattled the Jersey Shore Thursday afternoon was caused by test flights of U.S. Navy F-35 fighter jets in an area off the New Jersey coast, which stretches north to a point offshore of Barnegat Inlet, reports said.

NBC Philadelphia reported that the Naval Test Wing Atlantic, based out of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., was conducting tests of the aircraft Thursday in a designated offshore test area which stretches from Ocean County down the Delaware coastline.

Specifically, the NBC report said the F-35C variant of the aircraft, known as the Joint Strike Fighter, caused several sonic booms that were heard and felt across southern New Jersey, and apparently as far away as Long Island, N.Y. In Brick Township, residents reported their windows and doors rattling. In Lavallette, residents told Shorebeat that their pets were scared by the rumbling and loud sound that the “booms” produced.
