President Obama Skipping Nancy Reagan's Funeral to Go to SXSW Festival
Source: Mediaite.com
President Barack Obama will not attend Nancy Reagans funeral this Friday, keeping his originally scheduled appearance as a keynote speaker at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival. First Lady Michelle Obama, who is scheduled to speak at SXSW on Wednesday, will attend the funeral.
The president will not attend Mrs. Reagans funeral, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday. The president is actually traveling in Texas on Friday. The SXSW Interactive Festival is an annual symposium for digital startups and emerging technologies that takes place each year in Austin, Texas, concurrently with a film and music festival.
According to SXSWs website: [The president] will sit down with Editor in Chief of The Texas Tribune Evan Smith for a conversation about civic engagement in the 21st Century before an audience of creators, early adopters and entrepreneurs who are defining the future of our connected lives. The President will call on the audience to apply their ideas and talents to make technology work for us.
After the event, President Obama will travel to Dallas, Texas, where he will stay the night. The president courted outrage just a few weeks ago, when he did not attend the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, though he did appear at a memorial service. He also did not attend the funeral of First Lady Betty Ford in 2011, though Michelle Obama did.

(16,423 posts)Obama doesn't go to the funeral of the wife of the guy who had his job 30 years ago.
And the Republicans shirk their constitutional duty in order to play political games.
Both sides do it.
If only Obama would set a friendlier political tone, things wouldn't be so nail-bitingly partisan in DC.

The idiots are going to make a stink about this as they do with everything. Knock them back with facts.

(872 posts)I thought the Pres showed up at ex-Presidents' and former First Ladies' funerals. I am no fan of the Reagans, but skipping this seems a bit classless.

I know I wouldn't want to go to a funeral that the president is attending, even if I liked/loved that president.

(1,033 posts)The only First Ladies whose funerals have been attended by a sitting President in the last 70 years was Eleanor Roosevelt in 1962 and Jacqueline Kennedy in 1994 by President John F. Kennedy and President Bill Clinton respectively.
Screw the Republicans. Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Carter need to stay away from those wackos.

(26,619 posts)There's a wonderful story about JFK and Eleanor Roosevelt. She had supported Stevenson for the 1960 nomination and Kennedy had an appointment to visit her to try to win her support. The day before the scheduled meeting, Eleanor's granddaughter died. Kennedy offered to postpone the meeting, Eleanor said no, and they met for a few hours. Eleanor convinced that Jack would fight for Civil Rights, came out in support of JFK.. That was good enough for my mom. We had a Kennedy sign in our window the next day.
