Donald Trump cancels rally overwhelmed by protesters

The Donald Trump campaign on Friday night canceled a rally slated to take place in an arena at the University of Illinois at Chicago after protesters overwhelmed the event. The campaign cited safety concerns, given the tense confrontations between Trump protesters and supporters.
After the cancellation was announced, fights started to break out at the UIC Pavilion, CBS News' Sopan Deb reports.
Ahead of Trump's arrival, hundreds of demonstrators lined up outside the arena to protest Trump. Large groups of Trump opponents also occupied multiple sections inside the arena as well. The mix of Trump supporters and opponents created a tense atmosphere, and finally a spokesperson for the campaign announced the event was canceled.

Trump Chicago Rally Canceled For Safety
By Joe Ward, Kelly Bauer, Stephanie Lulay and Evan F. Moore | March 11, 2016 10:32am | Updated March 11, 2016 6:40pm
CHICAGO A rally for Donald Trump was postponed Friday night after.
"For the safety of everyone gathered in and around the pavilion, the Trump rally will be postponed," an official said from the stage.
Protesters inside dance and cheered after the announcement had made as fights broke out.
Thousands of protesters and supporters had faced off on the Near West Side Friday for the Republican presidential front-runner's planned appearance at the UIC Pavilion.
The scene was described as "total chaos" by one observer.
Earlier, the two sides clashed outside.
"Trump! Trump! Trump! Illegals are Illegal," some men chanted as they went inside the stadium at Harrison Street and Racine Avenue.
Protesters shouted back, "Thanks for visiting Chicago!" and "Why racist? ... There's no room for you guys!"
- snip -
But hundreds of protesters also got inside. Three students wearing shirts saying "Muslims United Against Trump" were escorted out of the pavilion as the crowd chanted "USA! USA!" Several more groups of demonstrators were later taken out.

(1,495 posts)Don't like him? I get it, he's a douche . But guess what? So are the protesters.
Doesn't matter what it is that is being protested the protesters always come across the same, a bunch of jerks that want to force what they want down everyone else's throat and no other opinion is welcome.
This event will probably cause Trump's poll numbers to go up another 3 points among Republican voters. The protesters, by trying to shut Trump up, are making him out to be a victim.
Kip Humphrey
(4,753 posts)unaware. Furthermore, those 'bunch of jerks' were entirely successful in their mission of keeping Trump's brand of bigotry off their campus. Around here, we are used to applauding such efforts because most of us want LESS bigotry in the world.

(9,886 posts)this type of protesting doesn't cause less bigotry. No good will come of disrupting campaign events. What's the point? Go vote for the other guy, work for the other guy, get the other guy elected. That's what elections are about.

(17,175 posts)I'm no stranger to schadenfreude (in fact, it happens that I think it is one of the most important and uncredited motivations in politics), but I am not so partisan as to think that war in the streets is an eventuality to dance about. It is not, after all, as though we can be assured that this will spell an end to those things which we despise.

(1,178 posts)Anyone who has not watched Leni Riefenstahl's film Triumph of the Will really should do so (link to the film, below). It is a magnificent piece of cinematography (though you need to suppress the urge to vomit) that documents a Hitler rally in Nuremberg. I will not compare Trump to Hitler because no one can be compared to him. However, if you watch a Trump rally after seeing Reifenstahl's film, you will walk away with a burning sensation in the pit of your stomach that will not go away. We cannot underestimate how dangerous this moment is.

(17,175 posts)I also think that certain iconography which has developed in this century, from multiple U.S. flags on stage (one used to suffice) to the obligatory display of U.S. flag lapel pins (doubtless made in China), also reflect the iconography present in the Nuremberg rallies.

And Trump plays nice to Chris Mathews saying he certainly is hoping they won't be any violence. Ha! And the press lap it up and dish it out.
Maybe they might mention the thousands going to Hillary or especially Bernie rallies and...no problems. Hmmm.
