Students Rejected from Polls Because of NC's Voter ID Law

Source: Think Progress

North Carolina’s controversial voter identification law is being used for the first time in Tuesday’s primary, and registered voters are experiencing the consequences of the voter suppression measure.

About 218,000 North Carolinians, roughly five percent of registered voters, do not have an acceptable form of government-issued ID that is now required under state law to cast a ballot.

The state’s voter ID law, part of a sweeping election reform law passed in 2013, is still being challenged in both federal and state court. Also pending in federal court are challenges to new laws that restrict the early voting period, eliminate pre-registration of teenagers before they turn 18 and same-day registration during early voting, and block people from voting outside their assigned precincts.

Unfortunately the state is so gerrymandered it's almost impossible for us to retake the state legislature. It's a nightmare. The Republicans are destroying this state.

It has been applied in a number of states not only NC. The idiots who voted for this are in the State legislature courtesy of Koch bros money and strategies. They vote for whatever the Kochs tell them to. We the people of NC are not secessionist, unlike the Texas legislature. Public polling has the legislature and the governor both out of sync with the large majority of NC voters of BOTH parties on this and other issues.

As a long time resident of North Carolina I would appreciate it if you kept your prejudice to yourself and paid just a bit more attention to the facts. Who knows but you might learn something about NC Democrats and North Carolina culture as well.

It might help you apply your energies to more accurately counter the larger conservative threats we all face.

For what it is worth Bernie spoke to this when he was here in September of 2015. I heard him say so with 9,000 others in Greensboro.

press and rigged the game.

We are not secessionist. You do not quote the truth. Voters of both parties opposed the Koch written voter ID legislation. The legislature forced it on us all.

Your insult is not justified by your own conditions. I've been part of the solution here for 35 years. Your perspective is out of wack. Condemning and condescending to contemporary southern democrats is poor sport indeed, and your remarks are the worst sort of cheap shot. We have applied to the Feds for help but they several times chose to drag their heels and use NC as an example to other states. Read a few papers please, eh?

of another color. So will my nephew, denied for the reasons listed in the OP above. The Native Americans in my family past will no doubt heave a sigh of relief to note this distinction.

FYI voter suppression is aimed at a broad spectrum of Democratic voters including those of color, those recently immigrated, those of a certain age and those who are disabled of any color at all. You really should read just a bit more about this.

As a disabled democratic voter I have some perspective on the matter. So too does my neighborhood: A mostly rural area with many farms long owned by Black families.

I am sorry you live in such an unresponsive state. We have hopes yet to change ours back to the moderately progressive place it was only a few years ago.

Check the other posts in this thread. This is a massive voter disenfranchisement effort that targets all Democrats in the state, with the goal of reducing the Democratic vote.

Students being turned away is just one feature of this evil initiative.

I don't care who is voting for whom, this configuration is wrong on so many levels, it's unfair to all of the citizens of this country.

I'm surprised it's this screwed up, despite seeming normal for many who don't really care about democracy.
