Actor Ken Howard, TV Actor and Acting Union Leader, Dies

Source: ABC News

Actor Ken Howard, who starred in the 1970s series "The White Shadow" and served as president of SAG-AFTRA, has died at age 71.

The union announced Howard's death Wednesday. No cause of death was given.

Howard's career spanned four decades in TV, theater and film. In the CBS series "The White Shadow," which aired from 1978 to 1981, he starred as a white coach to an urban high school basketball team — a part, one of Howard's best known, that drew on the personal history of the 6 feet 6 inch tall actor, who played basketball growing up on Long Island in New York and at Amherst College.

He was a staple character actor on television, starring opposite Blythe Danner in "Adam's Rib" on ABC and appearing as the chipper Kabletown boss Hank Hooper on NBC's "30 Rock."

I think I remember him best from the Colbys as Dominique Devereaux's past lover. Handsome man. RIP.

He was always an underappreciated actor. His star had faded somewhat when, in 2009, he gave what I felt was his best performance: his role as Phelan Beale in the 2009 HBO movie Grey Gardens.

God speed, Ken Howard. You added gravitas and distinction to each and every role.

However, Googling this turned up the interesting fact that Ken Howard once played Mark Twain on Bonanza.

I remember when "White Shadow" was on but I didn't watch it. I know he guest starred in a bunch of things (very common for those series back then).

Most people don't know this, but basketball didn't become popular in Turkey until reruns of the White Shadow started airing there. Now, basketball is huge in Turkey, and there are several Turkish players in the NBA.
