Japanese whaling fleet kills 200 pregnant whales

Japan's whaling fleet has killed more than 200 pregnant whales, according to its Fisheries Agency. The fleet set off in December amid widespread international outrage.

Following a year-long suspension, it said the fleet returned from its annual hunt with 103 males and 230 females, with 90% of the mature females pregnant.

International condemnation

Last year's hunt was called off following a 2014 ruling by the International Court of Justice that its whaling should stop. Japan said at the time it intended to resume its whaling later.

Japan has long maintained that most whale species are not endangered and that eating whale is part of its culture. It began what it calls "scientific whaling" in 1987, a year after an international whaling moratorium took effect.

Seriously.

Killing pregnant females, of a fellow intelligent species should be- IS a crime against "humanity".

It is the same kind of IMPERMISSIBLE UNSPEAKABLE EVIL.

The pod passes around a toxic puffer fish and regulates the dosage. This behavior has been documented many times in some dolphin groups. Some groups also drape seaweeds along their fins as decorations.

A country that revels in beautiful gardens and goddamn "civilized" tea ceremonies sanctions this kind of slaughter = makes no sense.

Scientific experiment: torpedo the whaling ships and see if they sink!

Why humans slaughter sentient beings is beyond my ability to understand.

Fuck their culture. Most Japanese don't eat whale meat anymore anyway. Is it just for the sheer brutality of it?

And I'll say that as well about US industrial meat production: fuck any culture that justifies hunting or wholesale slaughter of animals for pleasure and "culture".

Those poor animals are raised in torturous, inhumane conditions that make them go insane.

Boycott whale! Boycott all factory farmed meat!

It's not okay just because it's your own culture doing it.

wild stocks trump domestic animals in biological, environmental and every other way.
As much as I completely acknowledge and admire the intelligence and sophistication of
all sorts of animals and plants, the notion of them suffering in many ways doesnt elude me.
this is the problem for me- the protection and evaluation of critical habitat goes unattended
when animal rights issues surrounding domestic animals steals the spotlight.

the major damage gets done while KFC protests drown out marine mammal and fishery destruction
rainforest, old growth, reserves, enforcement of agreements and laws.

industries are getting away with planetary destruction and people are distracted by sad cute and fuzzy.
no offense. its just an issue for me. Habitat, diversity, respect for nature. fundamental needs.
People have whiled away decades feigning debate over evolution when the reality of extinction
reveals their duplicity.
we are watching the final reel.

I don't think the fights are mutually exclusive, in fact, the mass consumption of beef is the cause of losing the rain forests in South America.

I think it's hypocritical to see people get upset because it's a whale or a dolphin while they eat a big steak or pork chop from an animal who was driven insane and tortured.

we are separated from our food supply and made reliant/compliant.
food security is a big deal to me, and I think our water security is as tenuous.
