Trump questions NATO, Asia nuclear weapons ahead of Washington summit

U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Sunday doubled down on his criticism of NATO, a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy for decades, and called for the alliance's overhaul days before world leaders convene in Washington.
President Barack Obama will host the Nuclear Security Summit on Thursday and Friday with 56 delegations in attendance. While preventing nuclear terrorism will headline the discussions, Trump's views could be a topic as well, particularly behind the scenes.
In another sharp departure from historic U.S. policy, Trump said in an interview published on Sunday by The New York Times that he would consider letting Japan and South Korea build their own nuclear weapons, rather than rely on America for protection against North Korea and China.
The billionaire businessman, vying to win his party's nomination for the Nov. 8 presidential election, also said he might halt U.S. purchases of oil from Saudi Arabia and other Arab allies unless they commit ground troops to fight Islamic State or pay the United States to do so.

(1,957 posts)Trump is pointing at the problems we face. He is dragging the things that are hidden in the closet and stinking the place up and throwing them out for people see.
That is the good thing he is doing. It is the solutions that he comes up with that are the really scary things.
The really, really bad thing is that there are many people who will agree with him on his identification of the problem and arrive at the mistaken conclusion that his solution is good.
That's why he has such popularity with the conservative base.
So where the hel are the democrats with their tempering of the solutions?
Hel, the front runner is ignoring the issues -- or at least pushing the status quo.
I will fight for you? WTF is that?

(90,061 posts)That doesn't mean you should make the little boy Emperor instead.
The failure of the establishment to come up with a coherent narrative for their follies is only part of the problem, but it is the right place to start. The deadwood must be cleared out before reform can proceed effectively. Until we have sensible realistic policies and objectives and lawful government, there is little chance of positive results, as the last 60 years show, one debacle after another.
