[Mississippi] Senate passes religious freedom bill

The Senate passed the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act” late Wednesday on a 31-17 vote.

House Bill 1523 would allow clerks to deny same-sex marriage licenses to gay couples because of their religious beliefs and not face any repercussions. It would also allow private businesses and faith-based organizations to refuse services based on those same beliefs without retribution.

Sen. Jenifer Branning, R-Philadelphia, presented the bill to the Senate. Debate bill lasted over two hours.

“This is presenting a solution to the crossroads we find ourselves in today as a result of Obergefell v. Hodges,” Branning said, referring to the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriages. “Ministers, florists, photographers, people along those lines — this bill would allow them to refuse to provide marriage-related business services without fear of government discrimination.”

3. The poor persecuted religious.

It is amazing how my happiness and equality is a "threat" to others. When I finally was allowed to be married, not a damn single, "put upon" religious person was required to send me a gift. Not a single one was affected by my marriage. Not a single one of them was forced to participate in a gay wedding. NOT A SINGLE ONE!

Prior to my LEGAL marriage, I was, however, required to file extra paperwork to protect our assets. I was kept out of the emergency room when my "partner" was severely burned (well, until I threated to defenestrate a doctor). We did have to pay more in taxes. We did have to register our cars and home in BOTH our names, it wasn't a given. The list goes on.

Your rights end where my nose begins!

There will be more "laws" like this come. It is time for some to realize, GLBT rights are human and civil rights!

6. I wonder how they would feel if the law also

included only one marriage. In order words marriage is not between Man and wife No 1 then Man and Wife No 2, then Man and Wife No. 3 and so on. IF they are so concerned about what marriage is they should pay a lot more attention to their marriages. They are the biggest bunch of hypocrites.

If they feel threatend by other forms of marriage (biracial, same sex marriage, etc) they have far bigger issues. And they wonder why more and more people are finding religion to be irrelevant. You can only try to put your finger in the dam of progress before the dam will eventually break and washes you away. One can only hope that intolerant behavior will one day become their downfall.

Sorry, but your religion does not give you a right to discriminate against LGBT any more than it gave you any right to discriminate against non-white people.

These lawmakers in Mississippi (and elsewhere like N Carolina and Virginia and more) are purposely making unconstitutional law that they know will fail SCOTUS review just so they can pander to their base and point at the feds.
