A partially built flyover collapsed in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata on Thursday, killing at least one person and injuring scores, with many more feared trapped under mounds of debris, an official and a lawmaker said.
Police and passers-by were using their hands to try to move giant slabs of concrete and metal to reach those trapped, after the bridge collapsed at around lunchtime on a busy road, television footage showed.
"One person is confirmed dead. Sixty-two people who were trapped under the debris have been shifted to hospital, some of them are critical," Anurag Gupta, National Disaster Management Authority spokesman, told AFP.
Gupta said it was unclear how many people were still trapped under the debris but said "pedestrians as well as vehicles came under the falling flyover".

(2,103 posts)At least 10 people have died and 150 are feared to be trapped after a flyover being built in Kolkata collapsed.
Firefighters and residents were trying to rescue those trapped under the wreckage of the metal and cement structure, which came down in a busy commercial district of the Indian city.
Television footage from the scene showed a bloodied hand reaching out from under what appeared to be a massive girder. People were trying to hand bottles of water to survivors pinned underneath.
The condition is pathetic. At this moment no one has any clue how many people are trapped, said Raichand Mohta, a police officer at the scene.

Indian police have detained five officials from the construction company building the flyover in Kolkata that collapsed on Thursday, killing 23 people.
The five IVRCL Infrastructure officials are being questioned over possible culpable homicide, punishable with life imprisonment, and criminal breach of trust, which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years, police said. Police also sealed the Hyderabad-based companys Kolkata office.
IVRCL signed a contract in 2007 to build the overpass, and was far behind schedule for the projects completion.
