The citys casino-workers union on Monday released some grim statistics that it says depict the fallout from the elimination of employee health benefits at Trump Taj Mahal.
One-third of nearly 500 unionized Trump Taj Mahal workers surveyed by UNITE-HERE Local 54 lacked health insurance, according to the report. Nearly half are receiving government-subsidized health care through the Affordable Care Act, Medicare or Medicaid, with ACA-covered workers paying an average monthly premium of $204 and average deductible of $2,455, the report said.
Union-sponsored health insurance charges no premium to Local 54 members, who enjoy a $400 annual deductible, the union said.
The union is moving toward a strike at Taj, which is owned by Wall Street mogul Carl Icahn, and four other city resorts. A vote to authorize a strike is scheduled for June 16, suggesting that the unions bargaining sessions in recent weeks with Tropicana Atlantic City, which Icahn also owns, and Caesars Entertainment, which owns the other three, were rocky.
