Authorities: Officer responds to wrong house, shoots owner

Updated 3:13 pm, Wednesday, June 8, 2016

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a Georgia police officer responded to the wrong house and shot the homeowner.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Henry County police asked the agency to investigate the shooting Wednesday at a Stockbridge home.

The GBI says someone called 911 a little before midnight Tuesday to report hearing a woman yelling for help and gunshots. The GBI says a preliminary review of the 911 call indicates the three officers who responded went to the wrong home.

The GBI says the officers were met by the homeowner, 63-year-old William Powell, who had a handgun. One of the officers shot Powell in the neck when he didn't obey officers' commands to drop the gun.

Police go to wrong house and shoot owner
 3:01 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Henry County police shot a 63-year-old man after going to the wrong house, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday.

Officers went to a Stockbridge residence in the 600 block of Swan Lake Road after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots and a female yelling for help, GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said.

“A preliminary review of the 911 call indicates that the officers were at the wrong location,” Dutton said.

Upon arriving at the scene, police were met by homeowner William Powell. Dutton said Powell was armed with a handgun, which he refused to put down. An officer fired at Powell, striking him in the neck.

That is what happened to Tamir Rice, who wasn't even holding a gun, and the Latino kid in California who had a toy gun. As he turned to see who was shouting at him, they blew him away.

A) The cops most likely opened fire on seeing the gun . .

or

B) The 'perp' was half asleep and did not respond in the allotted 0.5 ns window allowed to comply with the command. At least the ED-209 gave you 20 seconds.

Do you always believe that the police report is truth? Was the man black? If so that is all the reason the need to shoot him in their opinion! You know that right??

I think lots of older men run out to "investigate" thinking they will be helping someone and then get shot. It is sad statement of our times for sure.

Take care!

HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

An officer-involved shooting which resulted in a resident being shot by Henry County police is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

. . .

“Based on the directions given to the police officers there, they wound up at the residence of Mr. Powell,” stated Scott Dutton with the GBI.

Upon arrival at 690 Swan Lake Road, officers spotted William Powell, 63, who was armed with a handgun. According to the GBI, officers told Powell to drop his handgun, but he did not comply. Powell was then shot by one of the officers in the neck.

Powell was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where he is in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

A neighbor tells CBS 46, Powell heard commotion around 1:30 am and stepped out his garage door to investigate. He was shot in his driveway.

When they are in Raid Motion, a showing of the badges isn't likely. Shoot first, ask questions later...if anyone is left. I'm sure they feared for their lives...all of them with drawn guns.

Hope the man lives...and gets a nice settlement.
