Families to talk to hospital after volunteer's tirade

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — An attorney for two families targeted by a North Carolina hospital volunteer in an expletive-laced, racially tinged tirade says he's negotiating with the hospital to ensure such incidents aren't repeated.

The families held a news conference Wednesday in Winston-Salem, almost two months after the volunteer's rant was captured on a cellphone and posted to YouTube.

Justin Bamberg, a South Carolina-based attorney representing the families of Isaiah Baskins and Katie Thomas, says the volunteer directed a racial slur against Baskins and also invoked the name of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during her rant.

Bamberg says no lawsuit has been filed thus far. He says the families are grateful that the hospital apologized and that the volunteer was fired, but noted the incident shouldn't have occurred in the first place.

female volunteer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina went from 0 to 100 real quick. It is unclear what prompted the encounter between the enraged hospital volunteer and a father, Isaiah Baskins, who was at the facility with his two children and posted video of the incident to YouTube.

According to the posting, Baskins’ daughter had an appointment at the hospital. Somewhere between the appointment and the start of the video, things went south fast, with Baskins claiming that the woman used the n-word. On the video she can be heard saying that she doesn’t want to see his “gray underwear.” According to the Winston-Salem Journal, she also referred to his “saggy pants.”

“We deeply regret and apologize for this behavior demonstrated by our volunteer in this video,” Wake Forest Baptist officials posted in the comments section under the video. “We are dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for all, with respect, dignity and compassion. We are taking action, and this individual is no longer a volunteer with our organization. If they haven’t already, one of our senior executives should be reaching out to you shortly. Again, we apologize for this appalling incident.”

In the seven-minute-long video, the hospital volunteer can be seen taking a stroller and pushing it out of the area where Baskins and his children are sitting.

6. Baskins did an interview with Egberto Willies that explains a lot

He and his children were in the family room. A woman came in with her children and the two parents began to talk. Somewhere after that was when the volunteer went nuts.

It sounds to me as if the volunteer thought that Baskins and the other parent were married and she couldn't handle the concept of a mixed race couple.

Aside from any racism that this woman has learned over her lifetimeit seems apparent that she has some serious mental problems. Maybe it's a form of dementia and she no longer has the filters she once did or maybe it's having a person like Trump show that filters are no longer needed. I don't think she could have functioned in North Carolina over the last fifty to sixty years if she had gone off like this on every non-white person or mixed race couple she encountered.

I'm glad she will no longer be working at that hospital but this lady needs some serious intervention. A lot of other people would not be as controlled as Mr. Baskins was!
